Buddy Valastro is the star of the hit TLC series Cake Boss and Next Great Baker and author of the New York Times bestsellers Cake Boss and Baking with the Cake Boss, as well as Cooking Italian with the Cake Boss. A delicious memoir - way more than I was expecting

Cake Boss is more than a gorgeous book with mouth watering recipes. Cake Boss is a memoir of the Valastro family, Buddy's remarkable father who played such a positive role in where Buddy is today... and within the first few pages of this book you will know that this is a book about family. From Danny Dragone, who helps out wherever he is needed, Stephanie who was the first woman to work in back with the bakers (no small feat), Joey the brother in law who is not only married to Buddy's sister, but is also one of the top bakers, the counter is run by Buddy's sisters. Little Frankie who's been in the bakery business since he could walk, and Sal who has been with the bakery since 1960. This is truly a family business.

And that is just the beginning, as I turned the pages I found myself immersed in what family means to Buddy. As I found myself reading the history of the "Cake Boss" I became immersed in the strong sense of history. I enjoyed reading about the first cakes Buddy was allowed to make, to his growing talent as a baker... to his first wedding cake where he really began to flourish.

(Who knew reading about the history of a bakery and a family could be so interesting?)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While I have heard of the show Cake Boss, I admit I have never watched it. I can assure you I am going to start now. This book jump started my heart for a family I did not know, and reading this book makes me want to know more.

I highly recommend this book for yourself or for a friend who enjoys baking. Gorgeous cover, fantastic pictures!

Story Good, Recipes Bad

I really enjoyed the story of Buddy and his family, but what was more important to me were the recipes. These recipes are nowhere near bakery quality. I've tried several and they just aren't up to par. I don't believe they were "home tested" as claimed in the book. The vanilla and crumb cake were greasy and the custard was far from the best I've ever made. The crumb cake also overflows and makes a mess when baking and the baking times are really off. I am truly disappointed in the recipes.

Don't buy it for the recipes

I'm a huge fan of the Cake Boss and ever since seeing the episode where he bakes Crumb Cake, I've been on a mission to find the recipe. The Crumb Cake recipe listed is not even close to the yeasty cake sold at the bakery. The baking time was way off and the base called for his Vanilla Cake recipe rather than the slighty sweet bread-like texture of the original. His Lobster Tails recipe is also included should you have unlimited counter space, time, and master baking skills. He states that the technique even took him years to master.

The stories are precious, although there will be few revelations for anyone who is a fan of the show.

Broad topic, uneven treatment, poorly illustrated

Doig notes in the Preface that he is undertaking the "daunting task" of synthesizing a "vast amount of fascinating material." Unfortunately, he seems to have been overwhelmed. The title of the book clearly states what it sets to be about, and the fact that there are only 196 pages of text should clue one in to the fact that the proposed subject has not come close to receiving a thorough treatment. The discussion of 3rd and 4th century church buildings and literature is sparse enough; by the time one gets to the Gothic period at the end of the book, he or she is presented with a discussion of only four churches (and their liturgical practices), three of them English. The discussion at this point is rather meticulously historical, when one wishes that Doig had instead given us some broad outline of what was going on in the entire rest of the world. Indeed the lack of a large scope is systematic; after the first five centuries or so, the focus of this book quite rapidly narrows down to Northern Europe, and eventually England itself. Such parochialism lends to an unsatisfying finish. Everywhere the contrast between detail and omission is surprising. For example, we learn the extraneous detail that Hervé was Treasurer of Saint-Martin between 1003-1014, and yet we hear nothing about liturgy or architecture in Russia.

Two other flaws condemn this book to relative mediocrity. First, Doig's title claims to synthesize liturgy and architecture, but these topics are not at all independent of theology and politics. Of course, Doig does take account of the theological and political developments, but not always very deeply. Arianism, for example, is decreed (with little explanation) to have barely affected architectural development. Likewise, little time is spent explaining the proposed influence of the Syriac church Qal'at Si'man on architecture in Gaul and the political and theological implications of such a connection. In contrast to these examples, some effort is spent explicating the development of the theology underpinning of the feast of Corpus Christi. Likewise, the personages of Constantine and Charlemagne receive extensive treatment. All in all, Doig seems only comfortable discussing most direct links of theology and politics with liturgy and architecture--and this gives a sense of liturgy and architecture as rather more disconnected than they really are.

Lastly, this book is maddeningly under illustrated, and those illustrations that are included are often of marginal quality. This might be a production issue; the book itself is printed on nice enough paper but little effort seems to have been spent on layout or design. Indeed, it seems that the page proofs were spit right out of Microsoft Word.

I have perhaps fallen into the trap of being too critical. The book is not bad; it is a highly readable, often quite compelling, analysis of the connection between liturgy and architecture for the first fourteen centuries or so of Christendom. Moreover, Doig synthesizes a great deal of more focused scholarly inquiry on the subject, which is certainly to be appreciated by the non-specialist. This is an informative book; its topography is just too uneven. Reading it is like hiking a mountain trail, always hoping for a sweeping vista around the next bend, but never seeing more than the trees and rocks close at hand.

Gelman produces a sure kid-pleaser with this slap-happy story, a sort of fantasy version of "Old MacDonald." It begins, "The other day I went to the zoo / It was a silly thing to do / The pandas were sitting / The camels were spitting / They were as bored as bored could be. / 'Come home,' I said. 'Come home with me.' " The sequence is repeated nine times, on each occasion adding two new animals, for a grand total of 20 animals and their various behaviors, all relayed in rollicking rhyme. Eventually, the animals go home with the boy narrator, create quite a mess and are returned to the zoo. The musicality of Gelman's verse and the popularity of the narrative conceit--releasing zoo animals--will earn children's devotion. Kovalski's funny and friendly soft pencil drawings will entertain presiding adults as well (witness her sight gag involving two Dominican nuns, penguins and panda bears). Ages 3-7.

Cute story in rhyme

This rhyming story builds on itself until the humorous conclusion.

It begins with,
"The other day I went to the zoo.
I don't know why I went to the zoo.
It was a silly thing to do.

The pandas were sitting.
The camels were spitting.

They were as bored as bored could be.
"Come home," I said, "Come home with me.""

By the end of the book, twenty different kinds of animals are doing twenty different kinds of actions. The boy does bring them all home.... and finds out WHY animals are kept in the zoo!

The illustrations are cute and detailed. Without being a pure "I Spy" type, there's plenty to look for in each picture, that you miss on the first glance through. (Hint: look at the other people in the picture, then look for them on the next page, the next, etc.)

This book has a little something for everyone.... it's the kind of book I can stand to read (or listen to my child read) over and over and over and over and over and over.......

TEWODROS ASEFA, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers University. Dr. Asefa is also Interim Director of the Rutgers Catalysis Research Center.
