Starred Review. The deservedly acclaimed Hayes returns in his fourth book with the kinds of sly, twisting, hip, jazzy poems his fans have come to expect, but also with a new somberness of tone and mature caution. You can spend your whole life/ doing no more than preparing for life and thinking/ 'Is this all there is?' warns the book's opening poem. Later, in a book that thinks hard about fatherhood, family, and mortality, Hayes asks, Who cannot think// Our elegies are endless endlessly and the words/ We put to them too often unheard and hurried? Elsewhere, Hayes treats memory with his signature wit: I believe, as the elephant must,/ that everything is punctured by the tusks of Nostalgia. The book also contains a surprisingly effective series of poems based on a form called pecha kucha, which, Hayes explains, is a type of Japanese business presentation in which the presenter must riff on a series of slides or images; Hayes adapts this form by bracketing the title or slide he's riffing on (The Magic of Magic and The Function of Fiction are two examples) and following with a four- or five-line stanza. The poems free-associate through their triggers, but images and themes satisfyingly resurface. Hayes, now entering mid-career, remains one of our best poets. (Apr.)

About the Author
Terrance Hayes received an MFA in poetry from the University of Pittsburgh. He was the recipient of a 1999 Whiting Writers Award, and his first collection of poetry, Muscular Music, was the winner of the Kate Tufts Discovery Award in 2000. He is currently an assistant professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Tenuousness

To read "Lighthead: Poems" by Terrance Hayes is to enter a world that's distinctly uncomfortable, almost jarring, as if the familiar has become dislocated. Perhaps it's like experiencing lightheadedness, except it's experiencing it as a state of normal. And you know this from the beginning of this collection of poems: "Ladies and gentlemen, ghosts and children of the state, / I am here because I could never get the hang of Time. / This hour, for example, would be like all the others / were it not for the rain falling through the roof. / I'd better not be too explicit..."(from "Lighthead's Guide to the Galaxy").

Time in these poems, for example, is itself not so much relative as tenuous, as if it's always slipping away or defined by other tenuous and temporary things. In a related poems group entitled "Three Measures of Time," his brother tells time by food ("The past is nutritious; the past is there on the table / with the hair you know is Ma's color..."); his father tells time by smell ("The smell / of barbeque in a sentence, the scent / long gone flat as money")' and his mother by "none of the hours jumping at the window. /By the joblessness of God and the body / beneath a floral bedsheet..."

Place, too, is something ephemeral, as in "Fish Head for Katrina:"

The mouth is where the dead
Who are not dead do not dream.

A house of damaged translations
Task married to distraction

As in a bucket left in a storm
A choir singing in the rain like fish

Acquiring air under water
Prayer and sin the body

Performs to know it is alive
Lit from the inside by reckoning

As in a city
Which is no longer a city...

In "Carp Poem," the poet is visiting the New Orleans Parish Jail to meet with 20 prisoners to talk about...poetry. As the poet walks by the cells, the prisoners become like fish in a pond, each prisoner's orange jumpsuit become the gold scales of the carp. Even prison is not what it seems to be.

There are other ways to slice Hayes' poems - through the filters of race, gender, experience, even age. But the tenuousness of life is what "Lighthead" seems to be most about, a tenuousness rendered with grace.

Bring A Lot of Different Stuff Together in a New Way

In this book, Terrence Hayes does something that I've never quite seen done before; he's smoothly synthesized the sound-and-emotion-oriented style of spoken-word poetry with the artful arrangement and order of more conceptual, academic poetry. For that, I have to give him some five-star love, even though a lot of the poems talk a lot about African-American identity and racism in a way that I have a hard time taking into my own experience. Yet the guy also references David Bowie, Wallace Stevens, "A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Antony and the Johnsons...so it's blazingly clear that he isn't a one-trick rapper/poet.

Really though, some dazzling stuff here, particularly his invention of the "pecha kucha" form (based on a style of Japanese slideshow used for business presentations). The tension between the "slides"/stanzas and their individual titles fleshes out the concepts in an even deeper way, even beyond the surface-level puzzles that he puts forward, so that the pieces end up working on multiple levels and kind of driving you insane and force you to read them over and over, getting more and more out of them each time. There's some game-changing stuff in there.

As mentioned before, I love how omnivorous he is with his references and also with his themes; love, family, the personal vs. cultural/racial history, music...there's even some funny stuff in there too!

For all the brou-ha-ha about the National Book Award committee being so ivory-tower-y, I can't fault them picking this book, at least. It's just so fluid and deft and thoughtful, and perfectly emblematic of how other cultures are slowly infiltrating and destroying the "old dead white men" paradigm of modern poetry, and re-making it into something way more strong and deep and hardy, giving it more of a fighting chance to become a significant part of more people's lives. This is a service Hayes does without being at all self-conscious, and the fruits of his labor are pretty miraculous.

Thought Provoking, Strong, Heartfelt

This was my first collection of Terrance Hayes work and I was hooked from the first. He expresses real passion in his writing. He crafts each poem, stating things with precision, choosing his words carefully so that the impact lies in the conciseness of his statements. Some of his poems are strong statements about the hardships in life and then you turn the page and find a delightfully humorous poem such as "Lighthead's Guide To Addiction." It was brilliant. Hayes is a professor and his literary background and skill is reflected in the masterful way he uses words. I enjoyed reading his works so much that I looked up Terrance Hayes on the internet and watched his acceptance speech for when he received the National Book Award for this work. He was a delightful man with a real twinkle in his eye, someone with verve who is passionate in expressing himself. I will definitely purchase more of his works.

Subtle, Powerful Sacred Energies

What I love about Jill's book is that she mingles the sacred with the physical. With each perspective on how we relate to our homes, to our lives, we are guided into a deeper contemplative space. I browsed through this book upon first receiving it several months ago, reading the highlights. I'm now pacing myself through each chapter, taking time to allow the energies to ruminate and make their way into my internal awareness. As I do, I feel those vibrations moving out into my home and environment. The shifts are subtle, but potent. I'll be keeping this as one of those books I can pick up at any moment, open to a page and feel something inspired.

There are also entries on authors of works of science-based speculative fiction which were, for one reason or another, spared the indignity of the genre label, and on fields of science and technology which have been particularly prolific in provoking such speculation. The list of acronyms and abbreviations, the chronology covering the literature from the 1700s through the present, the introductory essay, and the dictionary entries provide science fiction novices and enthusiasts as well as serious writers and critics with a wonderful foundation for understanding the realm of science fiction literature. The extensive bibliography that includes books, journals, fanzines, and websites demonstrates that science fiction literature commands a massive following.

Although the greater part of science fiction literature consists of gaudy action-adventure stories, couched as planetary romances or space opera, the genre is also―and far more importantly―the only cultural enclave capable of accommodating and developing serious speculative thought regarding the future. As the inaugural volume in the Historical Dictionaries of Literature and the Arts series, this work is unfortunately somewhat redundant. Although there is worth in being current (the volume does update many other reference works, albeit in brief), this is an expensive addition to an already crowded market served by the likes of Trillion Year Spree: The History of Science Fiction (Atheneum, 1986), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (St. Martin's, 1993), and The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction (2003).

However, as noted in the introduction, dictionaries are by their nature concise, and this one may supplement resources such as those mentioned above that examine similar topics at greater length. Following an excellent introduction by Stableford, described as an sf practitioner and an academic, the dictionary portion of the volume is arranged alphabetically and discusses some of the important names, themes, magazines, genres, and so on that comprise the history of science fiction. For example, there is a good cross-referenced entry on John W. Campbell and the magazines he edited, the genres he wrote in and influenced, and the authors he unquestionably helped. As the entry says, Campbell, with H. G. Wells, was directly responsible for the evolution of sf.

Also included here are an eclectic time line that traces key events in sf history from 1726 to 2003 and a substantial bibliography of secondary studies (from broad treatments to authors and themes). As previously mentioned, however, this is not a necessary purchase for libraries with similar titles. Unless a library owns no other reference sources on science fiction or has a very large science fiction collection, there is nothing new to justify the expense in this time of lean budgets. Caring Assessment Tool Book

Dr. Watson is truly the expert on nursing caring and did excellent work in revising this assessment tool book. The information included is better organized and deeper than the first book edition. Plus, an added feature is the contact information of the tool creators.
If you are looking for a deep philosophical explanation of what caring is and in depth information on the theoretical basis for assessment of caring, this book probably isn't for you. However, if you are a researcher and want to know what tools are available, know about their reliability and validity, plus see what they look like, this is your book.

Very good, but Religion section lacking

Wonderful for night time reading, good variety of topics, quick way to boost your knowledge. My only criticism is in the Religion category, which is almost entirely Christian based rather than equal time to all the major religions. In this country most people are generally familiar with the Bible and Christian stories, this would have been better giving more information on other religions.

Surprisingly good

This book covers a very broad range of topics with only page per topic, so I didn't expect much and prepared myself for a superficial treatment. But being the generalist that I am, I was obligated to give the book a try anyway.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how the good this book is. Having only one page per topic is of course still a serious limitation, but the authors make efficient use of each page and do about as good a job as anyone could. The range of topics is broad and interesting, the information is (almost always) accurate, the insights are useful and sometimes impressive, and the overall writing quality is consistently high.

As other reviewers have noted, one flaw of the book is that the font size is too small, and I'm surprised that the editors let that go through. It wasn't really a problem for me, but it may be a fatal flaw for readers with vision problems.

Another semi-criticism is that it's not clear that this book is ideally suited for any particular audience. For readers who aren't already well read, the fragmented and jumping-around format of the book may inhibit understanding and retention (but of course the book can be read more than once to help remedy that). And for readers who are already well read, the book will be more of a review, so they may not learn much, although I did manage to pick up some useful new tidbits despite extensive prior reading on many topics.

Even with the caveats noted above, I still definitely recommend this book to readers who are oriented towards broad generalist learning. The book is a quality resource for that purpose, and there aren't many alternatives to choose from (The Bedside Baccalaureate: A Handy Daily Cerebral Primer to Fill in the Gaps, Refresh Your Knowledge & Impress Yourself & Other Intellectuals is another good choice).

Not only an "intellectual" book, also a practical one

This is not only an "intellectual" book, it is also a practical one. It is easy to keep up with a single page per day, each of which is labeled with the day of the week, and takes only a few minutes to read.

Whether your first time through this material or a review, you will learn and be reminded of much general knowledge that educated people know and casually refer to in normal conversation. For those who are naturally curious, the material is interesting and fun to know - and those who think they are not "naturally curious" may find out they actually are. You may be amazed how fun learning this material can be when it's not being forced on you in excessive quantities by a teacher or professor!
