Although MITI was not the only important agent affecting the economy, nor was the state as a whole always predominant, I do not want to be overly modest about the importance of this subject. The particular speed, form, and consequences of Japanese economic growth are not intelligible without reference to the contributions of MITI. Collaboration between the state and big business has long been acknowledged as the defining characteristic of the Japanese economic system, but for too long the state's role in this collaboration has been either condemned as overweening or dismissed as merely supportive, without anyone's ever analyzing the matter. The history of MITI is central to the economic and political history of modern Japan. Equally important, however, the methods and achievements of the Japanese economic bureaucracy are central to the continuing debate between advocates of the communist-type command economies and advocates of the Western-type mixed market economies. The fully bureaucratized command economies misallocate resources and stifle initiative; in order to function at all, they must lock up their populations behind iron curtains or other more or less impermeable barriers. The mixed market economies struggle to find ways to intrude politically determined priorities into their market systems without catching a bad case of the "English disease" or being frustrated by the American-type legal sprawl. The Japanese, of course, do not have all the answers. But given the fact that virtually all solutions to any of the critical problems of the late twentieth century-energy supply, environmental protection, technological innovation, and so forth-involve an expansion of official bureaucracy, the particular Japanese priorities and procedures are instructive.

About the Author
James R. Janesick has written more than 75 publications on CCDs, including many NASA Tech Briefs, and holds 12 patents for various CCD innovations. During his 22 years at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he focused on scientific CCDs and support electronics used in many NASA spaceborne imaging systems, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Galileo and Cassini projects. Janesick received NASA medals for Exceptional Engineering Achievement in 1982 and 1992.

Comprehensive Practical and Theoretical Reference on Charge-Coupled Devices

Everything you wanted to know about designing and building CCD cameras is contained in this book. Details of how the device works (from a solid-state physics/EE perspective) are outlined. Janesick describes the fundamental operation of the devices: how the charge is generated, collected, transfered, and read out. This book is also a practical manual as well and contains circuit diagrams and lots of useful tips and gotchas for building a working, low-noise, state of the art CCD camera. CCDs have, at some level, been displaced by CMOS imagers and other types of sensors, but anyone working with these technologies will find a wealth of knowledge in this tome. I would highly recommend this book to any professional working with any type of solid-state imager. The author, while working at JPL and elsewhere, played a critical role in the development of scientific grade CCDs over the past twenty years. This book represents the culmination of lectures, monographs, and professional papers that he wrote over twenty years or more in the field. It is really a core dump of all his accumulated knowledge. Be warned that this is an advanced book, suitable for graduate students or professionals (primarily EEs and astrophysicists) working with CCDs and other solid state imagers in either the astronomical or defense fields. If you are an amateur trying to put a CCD camera on the back of a telescope in your backyard to look at Mars, or you know a bit about electronics and want to learn how your digital camera works, this is not the book for you.

Worth every penny.

Absolutely fabulous reference for anyone interested in how CCDs work, and how to make them work. I highly recommend this as a resource: the material is purely technical and laden with physics and math... not a layman's explanation. Also has great experience to relate and plenty of practical information on getting your system performance up.

This book is great. It gives plenty of information to understand what a CCD is and how it works. It is easy to read, and there are plenty of examples of calculations to help understand the physics of the CCD.

Yet, this book is not simply another chronicle of rain forest ecology, although the exceptional full-color photographs document with clarity the teeming life to be found there. Lasky also explains the methods scientists use to conduct research in this environment, sometimes under extremely difficult circumstances. For example, to gather leaf samples in Cameroon, Lowman had to hang over the edge of an inflatable raft suspended beneath a dirigible. In Belize, she uses walkways high above ground and, for the first time, allows her young sons to join her in the canopy. The long hours the scientist devotes to her work are not minimized, but her love for her research is evident. Her story might encourage young women considering science careers. The director of research and conservation at a center in Florida, Lowman travels with her two young sons to a rain forest site in Belize. There she and her assistant climb into the canopy and perform their experiments. They inspect leaves eaten by insects, look at "ant gardens" in the treetops, and observe the activities of various insects and animals and their effects on plant life. Later, the scientist takes her sons on their first trip to the canopy and then for an evening nature walk on the forest floor. The narrative approach to nature study can be tedious, but Lasky's writing creates scenes and relates facts in ways that are vivid and memorable. Every page of this large-format book features colorful photographs that reflect the you-are-there quality of the text: long-range views of the forest, close-ups of individual species, and many pictures of Lowman and her sons, which have a natural, unstudied look. About the Author
Leszek Gasińksi is the Chair of Optimization and Control Theory in the Institute of Computer Science at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. He is the co-author, along with Nikolaos S. Papageorgiou, of "Nonlinear Analysis" (CRC 2005) and "Nonsmooth Critical Point Theory and Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems" (CRC 2006). Nikolaos S. Papageorgiou is a Professor of Mathematics in the School of Applied Mathematical and Physical Sciences at National Technical University in Athens, Greece. He is the co-author, along with Leszek Gasińksi, of "Nonlinear Analysis" (CRC 2005) and "Nonsmooth Critical Point Theory and Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems" (CRC 2006).

Nothing Quite Like it Since REA Problem Solvers

Mathematicians, Physicists, STEM teachers and students, as well as older Engineers like me, who grew up with the 1,000 page plus REA Problem Solvers series (eg: Finite and Discrete Math Problem Solver (Problem Solvers Solution Guides)), will be overjoyed at this new series.

There are two senses in which it is a wonderful new approach-- first, it is one of a kind in topic (analysis, as you know touches thousands of subjects in and out of math), and second, it is completely focused on problem solving, as in advanced exam prep. I'm a quantitative/ math volunteer at preptorial dot org and our lives there are about the best test prep tools available. Today, this is a tough job because many text authors (or more specifically their publishers) love "splitting" their work into a series of expensive instructor and student student manuals, to make even more money after gouging students with the primary text.

Not so this text! All questions and answers are given in the text, and the focus is on problem solving-- giving exercises relevant to the material, then giving problems marked by difficulty level with fully explained solutions. Note that this material is clearly graduate level, or very bright ready for grad undergrad math majors. Even the "easier" problems are professional exam level.

The text is the most up to date analysis text out, regardless of format. I review hundreds of these for preptorial and none comes even close if your objective is problem solving or exam prep. In fact, going back even 10 years, the only series that even comes close is the outstanding MIT/China PhD series of test prep, and they are not nearly as comprehensive or up to date at this volume (example: Problems and Solutions on Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics (Major American Universities Ph.D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions) published by World Scientific Pub Co Inc (1990)).

In today's desktop supercomputing, Matlab, Mathcad, GNU Octave, NumPy worlds, "analysis" can be limited to formula application in some narrow definitions. That runs counter to the real world problems today that involve all four tools-- analysis, qualitative, numeric and stochastic. Amazingly, even with the analysis title, the problem set up and definition techniques are just like the exams-- and I see the real ones every day-- and DO NOT shy away from all three other techniques.

The price at $70 US from Springer is a shocker-- 1,000 page technical books from this publisher, especially with good journal references, are normally $300 plus and often don't even have websites or solution manuals, let alone complete solutions IN the text.

Given the formula formats, with thick graduate level notation on every page, I'd be extremely suspicious of a Kindle version if we get one, and also, there is an e-book version on Springer dot com but it costs $70 US anyway!

Although there is no "look inside" (Springer: please?), the Springer site has a brief shot of metric spaces that isn't helpful as it doesn't let you know that the "easy" problems are still grad level! Here is the missing table of contents:

1. Metric Spaces.- 2. Topological Spaces.- 3. Measure, Integral, and Martingales.- 4. Measures and Topology.- 5. Functional Analysis.- Other Problem Books.- List of Symbols.- Index

Highly recommended for all fields involving analysis, especially functional analysis, but also the numerous applications of stochastic techniques like Martingales, as long as you bear in mind the quick/graduate level of the material. Even the hints, explanations and "easy" problems assume you've completed grad level analysis courses and are ready to "learn by doing" problems and solutions you'll encounter in interviews, real life applications, and advanced professional and academic exams.

Every time I make that comment in a review, a smart undergrad emails to say they even find the hard problems easy, but I'd rather take that risk than have you pay this much only to find you're lost even in the "easy" problems. You have to learn this by doing, and the undergrads I teach, even in the advanced MIT and Coursera online courses FOR grads in topics like advanced quantum computing, are sometimes lost with real number/set mapping notation without review. And with today's numeric techniques and algorithms lurking beneath every function, even in analysis, you HAVE to know your matrix manipulations. That's not to take away at all from the execution of this volume, bravo Dr. Gasinski and Springer for contributing to the problem/solution field in so fine a fashion.

Emailer answer: Self teaching? Yes and no. Due to the fine explanations, this would be great for test prep without an instructor, BUT you might also have a lot of questions that you'd have to look up as you go along in other analysis texts or online. The bibs are excellent, and sites like preptorial dot org and textextras dot com are preparing adjuncts and online ponies for these volumes right now.

About the Author

MARK S. DASKIN, PhD, is Clyde W. Johnson Collegiate Professor and Chair of the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan. A Fellow of both the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) and the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), he has published extensively in his areas of research interest, which include supply chain network design, supply chain reliability, location modeling, healthcare operations research, and service operations management. Dr. Daskin is past-president of INFORMS and a past editor-in-chief of both Transportation Science and IIE Transactions. He is the author of Network and Discrete Location: Models, Algorithms, and Applications, also published by Wiley.

Pushing general management and engineering concepts in a service context.

The same issue with other books in service management and engineering. Again, specific issues and models that have been developed for situations that service organizations confront are vaguely mentioned or not mentioned at all. The contexts of most examples are is service, but the methodologies, etc., are better explained in specific textbooks (even the one chosen topics, might not the most pressing for service organizations.) The textbook gathers a bunch of operational, financial and marketing concepts, and applied them in the service context. When a read the textbook title I was expecting specific models, a holistic view of the issue and better examples. For me, the textbook doesn't work.

Dr. Fang Zhao is the Lecturer and Senior Supervisor of Ph.D., Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and Masters degrees at the School of Management of RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. She is the Principal Editor of the forthcoming research book Entrepreneurship and Innovation in E-Business: An Integrative Perspective. She has published internationally approximately 40 refereed research works in the areas of innovation and knowledge management, entrepreneurship, e-business management, performance measurement and TQM. I strongly recommend this exciting book to all those who want to better practice and understand e-partnerships. Professor Fang Zhao has done an excellent job providing an overall insight into the emerging field of e-partnerships. The book is a straightforward and extensive introduction to the formation and management of alliances and partnerships in e-business context. The book is a timely and very welcome contribution to the emerging e-management research. The book also raises questions for discussions and analyses.
