It is such a pleasure to read history from the people who actually lived it. And to see how they had to relearn truth and spirituality and what choices were available to them after their long torment. This book is such a challenge as we see how our culture is changing.

This book was quite prophetic, (published in 1974) as it predicted many of the events that transpired during the emergence of the Soviet nations from the communist hegemony, such as inter-ethnic tensions and the difficulty of democracy being established in a people who were not used to it.
As other reviewers have stated, the book should be required reading for anyone who wants to have a true understanding of international relations today, as well as the gross injustices of socialism across the globe.

Buy this book for the CLEP exam

I bought this book to study for the CLEP introductory business law exam after reading the customer reviews on Amazon. I agree with most everyone on here that this book is a good resource and will help you pass the CLEP exam.

The only problem I saw with the book was the order of the chapters. Specifically it didn't really define Torts until chapter 19 and yet the term was used several times in chapters 4-6 comparing Contracts to Torts. An oversight by the authors (and editor) just assuming that every reader already knows what a Tort is in detail. Do yourself a favor and read the Torts chapter before you get to Contracts.

[...] They also sell a practice exam that is useful to help you get used to the types of questions and the wording of the questions. I memorized all of the questions and answers to the practice exam. There were about 4 or 5 questions from the practice exam that were exactly the same on my CLEP exam.

I recommend you read these chapters from the Barron's Book: 1-9, 13-16, 18-20, 22-24, & 26. In addition make sure you know the 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 14th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

Definitely know all of the stuff in the boxes labeled "You Should Remember", as well as the bold words throughout the chapter. Also answer all of the questions at the end of each chapter.

I studied about 2-3 hours a day for 6 days straight and passed. It is a timed exam so be cognizant of the amount of time remaining during the exam. I almost ran out of time.

Don't underestimate this CLEP exam, it was fairly difficult and there is a lot of information to digest but this book made the process easier. If you don't pass the exam you have to wait 6 months before you can take it again so be prepared!

Great Resource for CLEP & DSST

I bought this book to prepare for the CLEP exam: Introduction to Business Law and the Dantes(DSST)exam: Business Law II. It is a great resource for both exams; if you can only but 1 book to study for either test then this is the book!

I passed both exams with high scores, thanks to this book. I agree with other reviewers that you should get a copy of the exam outlines as that really helped me to focus in on what I really needed to know.

If you are buying this book for the CLEP exam, you should buy or download the Official Study Guide from the College Board. I had at least 5 questions on my exam that were taken right out of the book. Also, I used the questions in the guidebook to determine areas in the Barron's book that I needed to spend more time on. I highly recommend taking the Business Law II exam shortly after you take the CLEP exam since some of the information overlaps.

For the Business Law II exam the majority of the questions are situation based, so you need to know how to apply the principles of the law. Lots of wordy questions which require you to watch and manage your time carefully.

In total I spent about 15-20 hours preparing for the CLEP; I spent an additional 10 hours to take the Dantes exam.

A CLEP Must Have Study Guide

I passed the Introductory Business Law CLEP using this book, which I had previously failed using Orr's Review for the CLEP. The Special Topics section included information needed to pass that was not even mentioned in Orr's book. Also included, are examples that provide a much clearer understanding of the topics and how to apply them. There is a lot of material to digest, so give yourself a good week to study from this book. Each chapter includes boxes titled YOU SHOULD REMEMBER, these are key, at a minimum you should be knowledgable on these points. Good Luck.

Great for All Who Know a Non or Low Verbal Child!!

Pat Mervine's book, How Katie Got a Voice is a treasure in many ways. Katie is a new student at an elementary school where everyone has a nickname based on their gifts and strengths. Katie, whose disability is not specifically named, uses a wheelchair for mobility and is unable to speak. Therefore her peers, who want to include her by giving her a nickname, are unable to determine Katie's affinities and are stuck in a quandary as to what to do.

"How Katie Got a Voice" has many purposes including as a teaching tool for children and adults alike. As a way of educating about the value of accepting others who are different and explaining self-determination and advocacy from a disability rights perspective, this book is a marvelous resource. A discussion guide is available on [...] along with a Reader's Theater version of the book, Katie's Disability Etiquette video, and other instructional materials.

The book is written for children in upper elementary grades (grades 3 - 6). There is a lot of writing on each page, which would be difficult for younger readers. I read the book with my two daughters, ages 12 and 10. The anticipation of Katie's nickname built as we read each page. They asked wonderful questions about Katie throughout the story and seemed to enjoy the discussion about respecting those with differences at the end of the book. As a speech language pathologist, I can see using this book to help others learn about children with communication disorders.

As a speech language pathologist I sympathized with Katie that she is in fourth grade before "receiving her voice" (i.e. augmentative communication device). This situation is all too familiar and though this story is fiction, many children and families find that access to AAC is delayed for a multitude of reasons. Ultimately, the purpose of the book is to help foster a sense of acceptance and belonging, which the story does well. It's a great addition to any speech and language pathologist, educator, or parent's library.

A Must Read for All Ages!

How Katie Got a Voice: (And a Cool New Nickname) by Patricia L. Mervine is an endearing story for children of all ages. Katie is a unique elementary school student with communication and physical disabilities. When Katie attends a new school, she gains more than a new voice. She gains new friends! This heartfelt story is a wonderful reminder that differences only play a SMALL role in our lives.

"How Katie Got a Voice (and a cool new nickname)" is a wonderful option for family, classroom and therapy read alouds. Katie and her friends are sure to inspire acceptance for generations to come.

All together, I think that the book contains a wealth of interesting data and information. The various contributions reflect the recent advances and trends in modern fjord research, including the development and widespread application of new techniques for sea-floor mapping, as well as various proxies for the reconstruction of environmental and climate change. The results often show that fjords, frequently referred as a simple systems, are actually fairly complex. Despite several reviews, the book is not a complete and comprehensive fjord monograph, however, and several important fields - for instance biology and ecology - are underrepresented.

Many of the contributions to the book will be of interest for geologists and researchers in other disciplines (e.g. biology, ecology, climatology) working in modern fjord and estuarine environments. The book is also a valuable source of information for all the scientists engaged in climate and environmental palaeorecords. Most Amazing Book EVER!!!

Alright, So I bought the used version for $1 Million. When I made the decision to buy it, I figured that for that price, it better make a better sandwhich than my girlfriend. I was so wrong. Not only does it make a better sandwhich than my girlfriend, it does everything better than my girlfriend! I told the book, "Get a job and buy me a bike!" The book got a job and it bought me a Ferrari! How cool is that? It also saved my life! I was eating some chicken nuggets that it made and I was choking on one. Well the book busted out like a pro and did the heimlich maneuver on me and saved my life! After that we went to make some baby books. So yeah, definitely worth the $1million used price!

At that price? What a steal!

Unlike certain other customers, I just HAD to have a brand new copy of this book. And for only $5 Million US, I couldn't let such an awesome deal slip away. Not only did this book show up at my door in a puff of smoke; it grew legs, cleaned my house, babysat my daughter, and even put away clean laundry for me! Can you believe that?! Well, after I finished eating the DELICIOUS dinner it cooked for me, it sat on my lap and read itself to me! I can't wait for a 2nd edition to get released!

Tom Morris has become one of the most active business speakers in America with clients that include General Motors, Merrill Lynch, IBM, the U.S. Air Force, MBNA Bank, and International Paper. He has published 12 books, including "If Aristotle Ran General Motors, True Success," and "Philosophy for Dummies." A former professor of philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, he is now Chairman of the Morris Institute for Human Values in Wilmington, N.C.

Wise, Very Wise --- Best Tom Morris Book So Far

Tom Morris's "The Art of Achievement: Mastering the 7 Cs of Success in Business and Life" is a superb book. The book is very concise, about 195 pages including the Preface and Introduction, but it is absolutely brimming with insights into what it takes to achieve big goals and, more generally, fulfillment in life as a whole.
The book is structured around 7 conditions that Morris sees as helpful to the achievement of any goal one might set for himself. These 7 conditions are a Clear Conception, Confidence, Concentrated Effort, Consistency, Commitment, Character and the Capacity to Enjoy the process. Each part of the book fleshes out exactly what each of these conditions entails. Here are some of my favorite quotes. From the section on a Clear Conception, "Our choices are always broader than our past. The best adventures in life need to be chosen, not from a predetermined menu based on what we've done already, but rather out of our deepest sense of who we are and how we can contribute to the world" (pg 31). On Confidence, a quote from La Rochefoucauld, "There is a form of eminence that does not depend on fate; it is an air that sets us apart and seems to portend great things; it is the value that we unconsciously attach to ourselves; it is the quality that wins us the deference of others; more than birth, position, or ability, it gives us ascendance" (pg 41). On Character, "Aristotle stressed that human beings are always in a state of becoming. What we are becoming is determined largely by what we are doing day after day" (pg 152). And a few pages later, from Iris Murdoch, "But if we consider what the work of attention is like, how continously it goes on, and how imperceptibly it builds up structures of value round about us, we shall not be surprised that at crucial moments of choice most of the business of choosing is already past...... The moral life, on this view, is something that goes on continually...." (pg 154). On the Capacity to Enjoy the process, "Love is always connected to learning. All of us can look back on the times in our lives where we have had the most intense enjoyment and see that they were times of great learning - learning a new sport, a new job, learning about a new person, or learning new things about a person already clsoe to us. Love and learning go together" (pg 166).
This is a truly profound meditation on how the world works and what it takes to achieve true sucess in any endeavor. It's the kind of book I will come back to when I have questions about what I need to do to achieve a goal I have set for myself. ... Read this book!...

The best "how-to" book I've read on achievement

This is a really great book on the building blocks and requirements for attaining fulfilling achievement. I think one of the best parts of this book for me was the author's classification of achievement as an art. This softened the definition of achievement for me and liberated the concept from my perception as a cold, money-producing necessity to something beautiful, fulfilling, exciting and worthy of creation. Everyone is different, of course, and how we do things is always different from how others do things, even when we seemingly are doing the same thing. We all put our personalities into everything we do. That combined with our ability to choose how we use our unique, God-given abilities to create achievement art that will help both ourselves and others, makes fulfilling achievement very worth creating.

Tom Morris, according to the book, was a very popular philosophy professor at the University of Notre Dame. I don't doubt it. He breaks the art of achievement into seven c's and fully explains them all. He explains his thoughts, backs them up with further explanations, discusses them, tells of real-life examples, and further peppers the pages with quotes from past philosophers that support his assertions and conclusions. One thing he doesn't do is preach to you what he feels he knows is right and then expect you to automatically take his word for it as many persons do. I hate it when I run into that type of attitude. Tom Morris' tone is friendly and in addition to teaching, he convinces you throughout.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is stuck in a rut and feels that they're not achieving to their full potential, for whatever reason. He covers so much territory within each of his seven c's and in each of their supporting discussions that I think there is a lot in here for just about anyone in this predicament.

My only warning about this book: His politically correct college experience is no doubt responsible for the need he apparently felt to be conspicuously inclusive of both sexes in his examples throughout the book. He switches back and forth from the use of "he" and "him" to "she" and "her" in his examples and each time he did I found it very distracting from the discussion. Very annoying, but this is just a heads-up. Otherwise, the book is top notch and if you buy it, I'm betting you'll be glad you did.

A True Success Book At Last!

I am sorely disappointed that many of the major bookstores are not carrying The Art of Achievement.
It should be proudly displayed on the New Book stand in all its glory!
I've read other "success" oriented books and I can honestly say that Tom Morris latest book carries a depth far surpassing the majority. Although the subtitle "Mastering the 7 Cs of Success in Business and Life" may sound typical and perhaps a bit trite the vast amount of wisdom, insight, spirit and inspiration within these pages brings one to a point of realization, comfort and hope other pop books on success simply cannot touch!
If you have not been able to win friends and influence people. If your cheese has been moved and eaten up. If your prayer of Jabez is left unanswered it's time you to learn how to master the 7 c's of success!

This is a great book!

INTRODUCTION

This book defends a very sophisticated view of positivism. First of all, it is remarkable how comprehensive, loyal and clear the book is while stating the arguments of authors that are against positivism. For instance, Shapiro dedicates a very good part of the book criticizing Ronald Dworkin for his very closed and strict sense of morality.

SHAPIRO'S MAIN THESIS

Shapiro's main thesis is that laws are plans and they are designed to make sure people can plan safely the outcomes of their actions. They are not derived from some metaphysical source of rights, they are created in an intersubjetive way, which makes them at a large extent contingent. Therefore, it is vital that law remains predictable and established in advance.

LAW AND MORALITY

Shapiro says most positivists were wrong when defending that laws have nothing to do with morality. Of course they do, he says, because as plans they aim at several goals, some of them are economic (promoting welfare, for example), but many of them are, in fact, moral (like preserving fairness).
That doesn't mean that morality is something given a priori, something away from us that falls over our heads. Moreover, this conclusion of his makes laws in general defeasible, but not in order to cope with some ideal vision of morality, based on what judge Hercules thinks (like Dworkin wants), but because laws are defeasible in their own terms. Since they are plans, they were made to be applied in certain circunstances, which means they shouldn't be enforced come what may, like some hardcore positivists want.

LEGISLATING IS PLANNING

The law must be enacted in a democratic environment, so that people can decide as a community, in which everyone's vote has equal measure.
This is the intrinsic worth of legality (from which comes the title of the book), namely, that we all sit down and talk and plan something ahead of time, so that judges can apply it according to what was previously decided, and not according to whatever comes into their minds at a given time. That is the rule of law, which is in itself a requirement of fairness, because it lets all of the subjects involved take part in the discussion and figure out what rules they want to regulate their lives. Democracy is not the government of men, but of the law, passed by the people. This is crucial.

GOOD QUOTES

Furthermore, I should take notice of the fact that Shapiro quotes some passages of paramount importance and that he clearly explains the arguments of most of the philosophers of law of our time, without assuming prior knowledge from the reader. He quotes some passages of paramount importance from, for example, Hans Kelsen, H.L.A. Hart, Jeremy Waldron, Lon Fuller, Ronald Dworkin, Richard Posner, Justice Scalia, Hendrik Hertzberg, etc. The list is long and Shapiro comments on them very well.
For all of this, he deserves, in my view, a lot of credit.

CONCLUSION

It is well-thought, extremely readable (good for both advanced readers and beginners), and makes some remarkable points about philosophy of law, originalism, rule of law, Supreme Court, Pragmatic Adjudication, Democracy, etc.
It is totally worth reading. I highly recommend this book and believe it will become a classic in the years to come (or it least it should, as long as people appreciate what is good).

y super predecible. Al menos yo

No me ha gustado tanto (ni de cerca) como La piel dorada, el otro libro de Carla Montero (y el primero que lei de ella) Éste es enredado, no resuelve bien el misterio del Astrólogo y la tabla esmeralda (dificil de resolver para cualquier escritor, de todas formas) pero Montero lo deja demasiado en el aire después de habernos soltado un rollo tremendo sobre hermandades, misterios de la antiguedad, alejandro magno etc (que yo me salte de todas formas) haciendo obvio que la cosa no era más que un anzuelo para conseguir atrapar a los lectores o compradores del libro. Tambien hay capitulos como el de la bomba, etc que solo pueden relacionarse con el argumento de la historia que se nos cuenta a traves de ciertos episodios historicos, quiero decir, sin mucha relación con el argumento en sí, y que funcionan más bien como efectos especiales que atrapan la atencion desviandola de lo que obviamente es un relato bastante endeble, y super predecible. Al menos yo, supe desde el principio quien era el malo de la pelicula, y la relacion de Allan con Sara. Pero bueno, así, saltandote esta y esa pagina, un parrafo aqui otro alla pude llegar al final.

DK books are always wonderfully illustrated, rich with maps, photos and helpful information - but since they are on the heavy side - they're great for travel planning and then just take a light map in your pocket for the day.

My only qualm with this is the DK Choice for the Vista Gourmet restaurant in Trinidad. The food was disgusting (overcooked seafood, undercooked chicken, really horrible appetizers) and the wine list was awful. A real surprise since every other recommendation was spot-on.

I studied briefly at Dallas Theological Seminary and took a course in the Masters of Apologetics Program at Biola University in California.

I love teaching and speaking at conferences, weekend retreats, podcasts, universities, Bible studies, and book clubs, basically anywhere the door opens for me to interact with people.

I'm crazy about my darling husband, Bruce, and our two young adult children, Josh and Caroline, who have transitioned into our dearest pals.

This is an amazing book that tackles every question concerning dating, love, sex, and how to see these things in light of our faith in Christ and His grace. Tracy is authentic and remains true to the word of God. This book is the best I've read on this topic and is a game changer for both guys and girls!
