Grade 6 Up-- A visually impressive debut in the field of updated atlases. An extensive introduction (47 pages) surveys "The Universe," "The Solar System," "The Earth," "People," "Production," and "Quality of Life" with charts, diagrams, and statistics on everything from constellations to deforestation. Next come 66 maps of the world's major cities. All are drawn to a scale of 1:200K, making relative size comparisons possible. A separate, comprehensive "Index to City Maps" provides quick access. Next, physical and political maps of each continent precede larger scale, more detailed maps of smaller areas. Scale size ranges from as large as 1:800K to as small as 1:64M. Over 100 single and double-page maps with full-color relief shading are complemented by an index of at least 65,000 entries. A closer look at the former Yugoslavia raises an important issue: Bosnia-Herzegovina is not listed or shown as an independent country although it is formally recognized as such by the United Nations. Also, boundary lines between and within nations are sometimes difficult to read and are often not as clear as those found in the Hammond Atlas of the World (1992), which is comparable in scope and content. and wanted a good Atlas that would save some eye-strain

I ordered this atlas when I took an online college geography class. I was frustrated with some of the aspects of the on-line program, and wanted a good Atlas that would save some eye-strain. This was certainly it. It has great detail, showing physical features and political boundaries nicely. Inside the front cover it has a great map index that shows the page where the more detailed maps can be found. There is a Gazetteer of Nations that shows the flags of each nation, a brief history, and statistics such as population and area. There are small sections discussing the climates of the world, and even a small but clear map showing dominant language families and predominant religions by area. In the back, there is an index of cities and towns in the world, which then show the country in which the town is located, coordinates, and the page.

It's been a great help for me, and real joy to just thumb through!

Impressive volume, great for reference or browsing

One sees a lot of VERY diverse reviews here. Luckily, some were positive, and led me to order this book. It's truly great!

Of course one wonders why a $150 atlas would be selling for a massive discount here on Amazon ($30 when I bought it). Plus, the shipping was free when I ordered (which is a good thing since it's really heavy!)

Well, at this point, I don't care why it was such a bargain. I'm just happy, period -- especially because not every bookseller is discounting it, as I write this review anyway.

I'm educated enough to expect high quality from a reference volume like this. After all, I don't plan to ever buy another one in the near future. Well, to my eye, the maps are *well* above average. All the labeling is clear, shapes and lines are well-defined, the colors well-chosen, the printing excellent. I couldn't ask for more... but I got more, anyway!

For instance: the satellite and other aerial images are stunning. The availability of diverse levels of detail, such as the city maps, allow one to pursue multiple geographical questions that might come to mind while browsing, all without having to get up and look for some other source.

That encyclopedic quality extends to the inclusion not only of a lunar map, but indeed a chart of the solar system, and maps of the stars in the night sky from both hemispheres. Everything you need to put this one little planet in perspective!

As for "life on earth," the Oxford Deluxe Atlas covers that, too -- not just the land itself. In other words, you can find maps showing population trends, economic activity, and other ways that human beings relate to the planet. That includes climate change, of course, and much more.

Are there faults? I suppose that every individual has some notion of what constitutes a "logical" organization of so much data, so that it can be found without resorting to an index of some kind. For instance, I wanted to show a child where the "Continental Divide" is in North America. I did not see any easy way to find this phrase in the index, and was frustrated at first.

But lo and behold, I discovered that there is a map of North America in which all its major watersheds are marked and color-coded! So, although there was no line marking the somewhat colloquially-termed demarcation line that I was seeking, there was in fact a map that showed the *meaning* of that term -- far better than I might have expected! In a sense, the book made me smarter by showing me the question that I should have asked.

Is the binding a problem? No, not at this price! But I think, IF I had spent the full price of $150, perhaps I would have wished for a sturdier binding. As noted, I figure to own this for a while. I'd hate to drop it, which would be easy considering its size and weight.

In the same regard, I am somewhat nervous about turning school-age kids loose on it. Don't misunderstand me -- the book is not a little wisp made of tissue paper! But it isn't as sturdy as a typical school textbook, or even a child's hardbound reading book. So you might want to give a couple of speeches to the kids and set rules for the book's treatment, to ensure its survival.

After that, then throw caution to the wind and stop worrying. I mean, as an adult I like it a lot! But this publication would be wasted if were only ever used by grownups. Somebody besides me should be buying it, and setting kids free with it. Let them sit on the floor with it, and roam the earth at will. I did this as a child, with atlases that were nowhere near as grand! Just make sure to keep food, drink, and pets away from the book while it's open!

I can't quite relate to the review that criticized the slipcase, of all things! What I care about is mostly between the covers of the book. Is the slipcase adequate to protect the book and its contents? It sure seems so to me.

Geography being what it is, who knows -- maybe an atlas as "old" as this (two years) is outmoded already by some people's standards. But as others have noted, it was very current at the time of its publication, so I'm content with the data it contains.

Above all, it is a visual feast. I opened mine, and after sitting with it and paging through it in awe for twenty minutes, I put it aside and had the sense that I had *already* gotten my money's worth out of it! I recommend it highly.

I'm torn between this one and its junior brother

This is certainly a beautiful volume, and I bought it solely for its price: I had paid $40+ for its junior brother a few years ago in the bookstore, so why not upgrade for free, as it were? The maps are lovely, and the front matter is largely helpful--I say largely. For one thing, the city "maps" are all but useless: one is hard-pressed to find a street identified by a name rather than by a generic route number (viz., within a national highway system); arbitrary pieces of cities are selected for presentation; and one finds suburb A peculiarly mislabeled as suburb B, or a leg of freeway C misidentified as freeway D. Then, there's the overall size of the work. Not that this is anywhere near as large or heavy as the London Times atlas--a work for which it is, quite literally, an ordeal to look up a city in the voluminous index and then hunt for it with a magnifying lens on the proper square of the proper page--but it's still awfully large. Given that large size, you'd think the publisher could do a better job of presenting the world's time zones. (Mind you, its "junior brother" didn't show time zones at all, but this atlas is scarcely better, offering a sketchy, fraction-of-a-page map that's all but useless given the numerous +00:15 and such quirks of the world's time zone allotments.)

All those criticisms having been leveled, the maps are glorious. Truthfully, I haven't seen nicer ones anywhere--even in, yes, the London Times atlas, which has been the standard-bearer for eons (though I guess its staff would refer to them as aeons). The colors are a delight to the eye, providing the perfect balance of legibility and topographic cues: you can actually see, e.g., Tibet straining upward off the page, reaching for the sky. Also, this atlas contains some vital maps that its junior sibling lacks: important among these are close-ups of central Honshu, Korea, the U.K., and so forth. Surprising omissions include better detail of Israel and Turkey: come to think of it, anywhere the borders are of intricate fractal dimension--say, Greece, Maryland, Denmark--a better job could have been done. I'd also like to see flags, let alone clear and more consistent indication of sub-national borders, be they of oblasts, denes, pradeshes, estados, etc. But let's look at the overall equation: for under $50, you get gorgeous maps; a plethora of very useful charts; mellifluous essays that don't hurt; lovely satellite photos that are, again, entirely harmless; and even a handy wall map to keep your kid brother occupied until his new Mega Space Zork Wars arrives in the mail.

Box of awesomeness!

Omg All three of these bad boys together?? Heck yeah! Here's what I thought of Justified.
Lisa Parks is a real estate agent in a quaint little town in Maine. She moved there a few months ago with her two best friends, Kari and Sicily. When they moved, Kari's younger brother, Marc Martin helped. Marc is a NYC college student. Lisa and Marc both have reputations of not wanting commitment from relationships. When Lisa met Marc a few months ago, her thoughts started to change. Marc stayed for a single weekend in Maine and they decided to not pursue whatever it was that they were feeling. Every single guy Lisa dates she pictures Marc. Kari hears from her mother that Marc has been acting depressed since his trip to Maine. Lisa decides to go back to NYC for a weekend to celebrate her mother's birthday. She ends up spending time with Marc. Can she let go of her hang ups about love vs lust??
Holy hot! This book immediately draws you in. Ali Parker outdid herself this time. To say the scenes are steamy is an understatement.

Grade 9 Up—Walking a fine line between reference and circulating nonfiction material, this well-written set covers scientific processes, but focuses more on the ways in which weather and climate impact human life. The organization of the volumes is questionable; the first one, devoted to weather extremes, covers floods and droughts, but it also deals with ice ages and global warming, topics that are clearly aspects of climate and not daily weather. Each volume is divided into long chapters rather than shorter entries, which may be off-putting for some researchers, but the captioned black-and-white photos and the occasional graph will help illustrate concepts. A helpful set index and glossary are provided in the back of every volume, as is a lengthy bibliography (in some cases almost as many pages as the text), but the books do not include chapter citations or footnotes, making it difficult to trace the origin of specific facts or data. Coverage ranges from everyday weather patterns to extreme occurrences. Volume 1 is Weather Extremes; the other four volumes are Air Masses and Weather Patterns; Cyclones, Hurricanes, and Tornadoes; Climate Change; and The Earth and the Sun. Volumes begin with detailed introductions followed by eight to ten chapters. Weather phenomena from the U.S. and around the world are included. For example, Cyclones, Hurricanes, and Tornadoes includes Hurricanes Katrina and Andrew in addition to a chapter devoted to Bay of Bengal cyclones. In Weather Extremes, chapters range from “The Great Ice Age and Volcanoes” to “Weather and Warfare” to a chapter on investigating future trends. Sidebars provide further information, answer basic questions relating to the subject at hand, and suggest simple activities. The final chapter in each volume is a review. Black-and-white illustrations and photographs appear throughout the set. All of the volumes finish with a glossary, a bibliography, and a set index. In addition, several appendixes are repeated in each book: a chronology of “Important Dates in Weather and Climate History,” brief discussions of extreme weather events around the world and in the U.S., and a listing of measurements pertaining to weather and climate. This book helped me overcome many spiritual problems that I had struggled with for years. The author shows how the sin nature is passed down (think about your own blood-line & 'genetic' problems or 'learned' behaviors) and how to take back your God given right to be redeemed. If I could, I would give this book 10 stars.

About the Author

Craig A. Wrisberg, PhD, is a professor of sport psychology in the department of exercise, sport, and leisure studies at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he has taught since 1977. During the past 30 years he has published numerous research articles on the topics of anticipation and timing in performance, knowledge of results and motor learning, and the role of cognitive strategies in sport performance. He is also the coauthor (with Richard Schmidt) of the popular text Motor Learning and Performance, published by Human Kinetics. In 1982 he received the Brady Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 1994 the Chancellor's Award for Research and Creative Achievement.

A former president of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, Dr. Wrisberg is a fellow of both AASP and the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.

In addition to teaching and conducting research, Dr. Wrisberg provides mental training services for student-athletes in the men's and women's athletics departments at Tennessee. In his work with athletes, he applies many of the important concepts and principles covered in Sport Skill Instruction for Coaches.

Dr. Wrisberg enjoys several outdoor activities, including tennis, canoeing, and hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Captivating, yet freaky

This book really had all I could have wanted, until I got towards the end and several sexual scenes took place, which were way out of my league. IF you are not into menage and more, this book is not for you. IF you can get past this portion, the book is an excellent read.

Very realistic

I felt this story was rather slow, until the last 10 percent then it was a quick steamy interlude and vanquishing the bad guy. I gave the fourth star star only because it was very real, horrible and sad, as things would definitely be after WWlll. I also liked how we got to know each of the good guys, and even though we never get a peek into the bad guy, one really does understand the crazy megalomaniac he is through his actions. A good read for the most part.

I really liked this story. The world building was fantastic. The men all hero's and the type of men any woman would want as their own. Angel was a very strong female character, who could inspire anyone to be more and better.

In fall 1985 Verghese--who was born in Ethiopia of Indian parents--returned with his wife and newborn son to Johnson City, Tennessee, where he had done his internship and residence. As he watched AIDS infect the small town, he and the community learned many things from one another, including the power of compassion. An AIDS expert who initially had no patients, Verghese describes meeting gay men and then eventually others struggling with this new disease. Verghese's patients include a factory worker confronting her husband's AIDS, bisexuality, and her own HIV status and a religious couple infected via a blood transfusion attempting to keep their disease secret from their church and their children. Infectious disease specialist Verghese is a Christian from subcontinental India who earned his M.D. in Ethiopia, and living in various cultures has helped him to be open-minded toward and supportive of his patients, who currently are the veterans and civilians living in and around Johnson City in east Tennessee. His book covers the five years in the latter 1980s when AIDS began to make itself felt in the area and during which he treated gays, victims of tainted transfusions, and infected spouses. Among the book's fascinating features are its portrayals of the gradually increasing impact of AIDS on the community, the changing relationships between Verghese and other health caregivers and the patients, and the frightening toll the disease took on families, friends, and society. Nor were Verghese himself, his wife, and even his children immune to those grinding forces. Few, if any, books written by someone without AIDS have offered such a perceptive and realistic perspective on this disease and its ramifications. William Beatty

One of the best memoirs I've ever read

With the eye, ear and voice of a novelist and with the compassion of a healer, Dr. Abraham Verghese has taken his experiences as "the AIDS doctor" of east Tennessee and turned them into an incredible memoir. This is one of the most touching and engrossing books I've read in years.
When Verghese landed in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1985, he came as a newly-accredited infectious diseases specialist to treat veterans, most of whom had lung cancer and emphysema, and to spend one day a week in the town medical center he learned to call the "Miracle Center". When the center's first AIDS patient entered the hospital, it was the beginning of the plague which would soon extend across the country, not just in the big city locales where the majority of homosexual men and drug abusers lived. They were coming home to die.
Because the young doctor had a strong desire to help and an ability to tolerate the differences of others, he gradually found himself almost obsessed with caring for his patients. He loved them as people, and as they began to die, he mourned. They were on his mind constantly, even when he was home with his beautiful wife and small sons to the point where his marriage and the center of his home became endangered by his devotion to a setting and to people which excluded them.
This book is so beautifully written I could not put it down. Each patient became fully alive for me, thanks to Verghese's ability to describe them, and I, too, mourned them as they passed. This is a memoir I will not soon forget. Poignant in its humanity, staggering in the scope of its tragedy, it will remain Verghese's monument to Tennessee and the people he came to love in all their variety.

A compassionate doctor confronts the HIV epidemic

As a doctor, I rarely enjoy books about physicians because they simply don't show the reality of our lives.

Unlike the soap opera sexuality and black humor (and ridicule) in many medical best sellers, Dr. Verghese writes a the simple tale of a doctor and his patients, told with quiet compassion and an eye for the small details of human experience.

He tells of the daily fight to keep people alive. And he tells the story of how ordinary Americans confront this new disease with courage.

Too often, Southern Americans are portrayed as bigoted religious homophobes by the literati. His stories of how the close knit families confront and accept their dying sons and husbands.

And he tells of the common --but rarely discussed-- story of immigrants. This a story I see in my own family, where one person comes, and then is joined by friends and family, and soon a thriving immigrant community invigorates the small towns of middle America.

Finally, he shows the strains of practicing medicine in the context of a daily life.

Most of the reviews paint this as a book about HIV, and it is.

But it is a book about families, about culture, and especially about the life of ordinary physicians who daily confront the struggle against sickness and mortality.

I would recommend it to anyone thinking of joining the medical profession.

Good for the first part

The book was very interesting for the first 100 pages or so. I knew about the AIDS epidemic in the 80s from a factual standpoint, but reading this helped me to understand what it was like to be there and to be involved. However, the book could have been a lot shorter. It seemed to get repetitive and preachy.

Short Scripts

As a hypnotherapist, I have all the main books on scripts. This book being barely 250 pages is not really all that "big" and although he dresses up that he's going to give you all kinds of different cool cutting edge scripts and he does, they are all pretty darn short. I guess if you read each one three times you could get some good results. Parts of some of these scripts are okay and some of it is really great and amazing. Just be informed that they are short and perhaps that is as it was intended. I was just surprised. For example the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy Hypnosis script is less than two pages. How do you teach someone THAT in less than two pages? ACT Therapy was a page and two lines. I rest my case... lol

4/9/2006 UPDATE: After a few years of use I am changing my rating from 2 star to now 4 star. He has some scripts for some things I don't typically see in my office often. Although short scripts, if you repeat them 3x you can see some deep results. His script on "Overcoming Social Anxiety: Confidence Building" was one I have used with almost perfect success with many people. Also Sports Performance was pretty good. You may want to look through the table of contents to see if it has something you might want to use in your sessions. I still leave one star out for the same reasons as my original, but there is good stuff here that was put together well!

I collect hypnosis script books for new and refreshing ideas for myself and for my clients. The Big Book of Hypnosis Scripts is one of my favorites and its one of a few that I turn to first for stimulating my thought process. I highly recommend Richard Nongard's Big Book of Hypnosis scripts.

Good value, Great scripts

I bought the book for ideas on creating my own scripts for my own use. However, I am in the process of using it pretty much as is and recording it to listen to myself. Thereby saving a lot of money on pre-recorded scripts. Some of the interesting sessions include: pain control process(3 scripts), weight loss (4 scripts), managing anxiety and stress, goal-setting, and procrastination. Those alone are worth the price of the book to me. For hypnotherapists, hypnotists, and coaches, I believe there is a whole lot of value here, also. However, those who are interested in experiencing a variety hypnosis scripts for using themselves will find a great deal, too. There is a variety of subjects covered in the book.
