Unique Storyline.

Absolutely outstanding read! I couldn't read it fast enough. The build up to the books release was intense, I knew Desecrating Solomon was going to be amazing but Lucian really out done himself, it was god damn EPIC! One thing that is consistent throughout this authors work is his ability to create a story that you can't help but feel part of, like you are living in the characters shoes and experiencing their emotions first hand. This was brought to life even more so in this book. This was such an emotional read, Chaos has been through so much Horror, pain and abuse in her life, it really choked me up every time she spoke about 'Master' the way she did. I truly felt how alone and vulnerable she was when she recalled the Baby Possom and the earrings after a dream she had. Enter Solomon Gorge, I seriously love this man and his fierce need to protect Chaos from things he doesn't understand. I can't wait for the next book, I need to know what happens next, what dark horrors will Solomon unearth next before he finds the truth I wonder... This is a very well written a book and I highly recommend it to all lovers of Dark reads. I rate it 5 stars.

Oh My Gosh

Once you start you will not be able to stop until the agonizing last page when you scream no don't be done!!!! This book is so good. Solomon wraps you up and you don't want to ever let go of him. He has so many layers, depth of emotions and then Chaos comes barreling into his life and opens up his neatly packed away vulnerability. I was screaming at the atrocities that Chaos had to endure at the hand of Master, his cruelty and depravity. The entire story is ominous, suspenseful and a whole lot creepy. Lucian Bane does a brilliant job in this first book can't wait for book 2!

Intriguing beginning

Okay well this is one of those books you have to wait and let it settle in your head before you spit up your review.

So a day after reading the book, I'm still like WTH. Not sure whether to laugh or cry. Probably both. This is a book that take you on a journey into the woods of West Virginia. Where Solomon Gorge has been called out in his dreams by the woman who identifies herself as Chaos, a woman he finds broken and abused. As he tries to understands what and why she is, there are games afoot and it seems everyone in the town knows of the horrors except him, and times a ticking away.

Chaos, who was Silence has been given her mission. Prepare the sacrifice, don't fail. As she finds herself in Solomon's care, we begin to learn of her pain, the trials that she has gone through. We grieve for her, and the mental games that have her broken and thinking herself unworthy.

This books plays into your mind and it may not be for everyone out there, there were times when I wanted to cry for the pain portrayed, and times when i was in disbelief because of the twisted thinking of the Master and his cronies. An interesting and intriguing read for sure and after reading it, I anxiously await the second as the cliffhanger at the end left me speechless.

Beware possible trigger moments in this book for some readers.

Nina Baym (Ph.D. Harvard) is Swanlund Endowed Chair and Center for Advanced Study Professor Emerita of English and Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of The Shape of Hawthorne’s Career; Woman’s Fiction: A Guide to Novels by and About Women in America, 1820–1870; Novels, Readers, and Reviewers: Responses to Fiction in Antebellum America; American Women Writers and the Work of History, 1790–1860; American Women of Letters and the Nineteenth-Century Sciences and most recently, Women Writers of the American West, 1833–1927. Some of her essays are collected in Feminism and American Literary History; she has also edited and introduced many reissues of work by earlier American women writers, from Judith Sargent Murray through Kate Chopin. In 2000 she received the MLA’s Hubbell Medal for lifetime achievement in American literary studies.

Robert S. Levine (Ph.D. Stanford) is Distinguished University Professor of English and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of Conspiracy and Romance: Studies in Brockden Brown, Cooper, Hawthorne, and Melville; Martin Delany, Frederick Douglass, and the Politics of Representative Identity; and Dislocating Race and Nation: Episodes in Nineteenth-Century American Literary Nationalism. Philip F. Gura (Ph.D. Harvard) is William S. He is the author of many books, including The Wisdom of Words: Language, Theology, and Literature in the New England Renaissance; A Glimpse of Sion’s Glory: Puritan Radicalism in New England, 1620–1660; Jonathan Edwards, America’s Evangelical; and American Transcendentalism: A History. For ten years he was editor of the journal Early American Literature. He is an elected member of the Society of American Historians, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the American Antiquarian Society, and the Colonial Society of Massachusetts.

Jerome Klinkowitz (Ph.D. Wisconsin), is University Distinguished Scholar and Professor of English at the University of Northern Iowa. He is the author or editor of over forty books in postwar culture and literature, among them, Structuring the Void: The Struggle for Subject in Contemporary American Fiction; Kurt Vonnegut’s America; Literary Disruptions: The Making of a Post-Contemporary American Fiction; and The Practice of Fiction in America: Writers from Hawthorne to the Present.

Arnold Krupat (Ph.D. Columbia) is Professor of Literature at Sarah Lawrence College. He is the author of, among other books, Ethnocriticism: Ethnography, History, Literature; Red Matters: Native American Studies; and, most recently, All That Remains: Varieties of Indigenous Expression (2009). He is the editor of a number of anthologies, including Native American Autobiography: An Anthology and New Voices in Native American Literary Criticism. With Brian Swann, he edited Here First: Autobiographical Essays by Native American Writers, which won the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers Award for best book of nonfiction prose in 2001.

Mary Loeffelholz (Ph.D. Yale) is Professor of English and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Northeastern University. She is the author of Dickinson and the Boundaries of Feminist Theory; Experimental Lives: Women and Literature, 1900–1945; and, most recently, From School to Salon: Reading Nineteenth-Century American Women’s Poetry. With Martha Nell Smith, she edited the Blackwell Companion to Emily Dickinson. Jeanne Campbell Reesman (Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania) is Ashbel Smith Professor of English at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Fabulous learning

This is part of the course material required for my study of American Trends in Literature at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I was dismayed when I received it, it is so thick. However, the content is beautiful, every writer or series of writing I study awake me to a whole new world in my home county, America, I am so very grateful for this book and the insights it brings.

The Norton Anthology of American Literature

This was the text required for my class. I love the reading but the pages are paper thin and can tear easily. The text is small and sometimes difficult to read If you have any vision impairment. I wish it was a little bit bigger especially since I was using it for class and it certainly contains some classic material that I would like to read again later.

Yep, I'm a geezer student. Norton does a great job of providing a solid survey text. Some of the introductory material is biased, cut if you can read past that, source some original material and university sites, you'll come away with a better, different, viewpoint than you had if you'd studied the same subject in the 80s or 90s.

Macionis and Vincent Parrillo have written the leading urban studies text, Cities and Urban Life (Pearson). Macionis’ most recent textbook is Social Problems (Pearson).

John Macionis is Professor and Distinguished Scholar of Sociology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he has taught for almost thirty years. During that time, he has chaired the Sociology Department, directed the college’s multidisciplinary program in humane studies, presided over the campus senate and the college’s faculty, and taught sociology to thousands of students.

In 2002, the American Sociological Association presented Macionis with the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching, citing his innovative use of global material as well as the introduction of new teaching technology in his textbooks.

Professor Macionis has been active in academic programs in other countries, having traveled to some fifty nations. He writes, “I am an ambitious traveler, eager to learn and, through the texts, to share much of what I discover with students, many of whom know little about the rest of the world. For me, traveling and writing are all dimensions of teaching. First, and foremost, I am a teacher–a passion for teaching animates everything I do.”

At Kenyon, Macionis teaches a number of courses, but his favorite class is Introduction to Sociology, which he offers every semester. He enjoys extensive contact with students and invites everyone enrolled in each of his classes to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The Macionis family–John, Amy, and children McLean and Whitney–live on a farm in rural Ohio. In his free time, Macionis enjoys tennis, swimming, hiking, and playing oldies rock-and-roll (he recently released his first CD). Macionis is as an environmental activist in the Lake George region of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, working with a number of organizations, including the Lake George Land Conservancy, where he serves as president of the board of trustees.

From an instructor's perspective

I have to use this book to teach Sociology 101, and it frustrates me to no end. The book is a failure in every aspect.

Introductory textbooks have to simplify things, of course, but Macionis oversimplifies to the point where my students feel that their intelligence has been insulted, and worst of all, don't realize that the sociological concepts he's talking about are more than simple stereotypes and platitudes. He writes at one point, essentially, that "white people don't understand poverty", while every college freshmen knows that poor whites do exist, and that the author must be either a racist or an idiot for thinking otherwise. But what does the cultural construct of race have to do with social hierarchy and economics? Macionis doesn't start that conversation, you'll have to do it yourself.

And that's the general flaw of the book, Macionis writes chapter after chapter of superficial lists of concepts, theorists, and vocabulary, but never does the real work of laying out key sociological theories in a simple and thorough way, which of course is exactly what a textbook is for. As a teacher, I'm then forced to spend class time laying out the basics that Macionis didn't cover, everything from culture to symbolic interactionism. He'll give a few paragraphs to Weber, Marx, or Freud, but doesn't actually explain them in any coherent way.

Some things are completely absent. Macionis doesn't mention some key concepts, like social capital, and doesn't explain at all how sociologists use statistics. With glaring omissions like those, it's obvious that Macionis simply doesn't understand sociology.

Finally, the book just isn't organized in any worthwhile way. Macionis puts the three big "approaches" (StrucFunc, Conflict, Interaction) in the first chapter, before the students have been exposed to enough material to understand why they're useful or important. Then the rest of the book is a laundry list of concepts, clumped into chapters without any real theme. For example, chapter 4 is about social interaction, status, role, emotion, and humor, but gender, class, race, social groups, and social stratification are spread out in other chapters. Sure, the students learn their vocabulary, but it becomes very difficult to connect the different concepts to each other.

Macionis offers snippets of narrative to help explain the concepts, but nothing big enough for actual analysis, so you'll have to do it instead. All in all, this book does nothing that it's supposed to do, and should not be bought by anyone.

great personal glimpse of the times

Renoir's son, Jean, became a famous French film director. When Jean was a young man he had been shot in the leg during WWI. His interviews with his disabled father occur as he is recovering from his war wounds. The son expresses his gratitude towards the man who shot him, saying that he would never had gotton to know his father better, unless this had happened.
Surprisingly, I felt this book was less about art, and more an insight into the time period and of a personal philosophy about life. It is the reminisences of an ill father (Renoir) to his son (Jean Renoir.) A fascinating book, give you insight into the personality and character of the painter Renoir, and also the wartime period and the economic depression that he had lived through with his friends, some of whom died in the war (I believe this was in the 1860's.)

You learn more about Renoir, the man, who is indeed annoyingly sexist in his attitudes towards women. However, I really think there are many men today who even view women in this way! That said, I loved Renoir's viewpoints about changing modern society and how he thinks that modern people have too much comfort and convenience in their lives..I wonder what he would think today? He also liked to have everything handmade around him, from his table, to cups to chairs, and he felt that was important. Also, living simply. All in all, a very insightful book.

No fan of Conan would give such a lousy review and only 2 stars! This is one of Robert E. Howard's (1906-1936) best stories ever as told by all REH Scholars! REH is the creator of Conan, Bran Mak Morn, Red Sonja, Kull, Solomon Kane, and many other characters and even poetry and horror stories! He's the best writer and poet ever!

Red Nails starts out with a prehistoric monster chasing Valeria with Conan in hot pursuit. They climb a tree and from their the story gets really good.

If you've never read a REH story you're in for a real treat! Read Red Nails for free and then get the REH Ominbus 99 stories for only $1.99 and read other outstanding stories he's written.

Beyond The Black River, Red Nails, and Tower of The Elephant are three of my favorite REH Conan stories.

Can I add another 5 stars to the above?

First of all, I started reading "Conan the Barbarian" books by Robert E Howard when I was 9 years old. With the help of a dictionary, I parsed the wickedly exciting stories and fell in love with this genre.
Meanwhile, revisiting this story now as an adult, and being able to appreciate it for the masterpiece it is, well, it's just wonderful.
You can't go wrong with this one as an introduction to the sword and sorcery genre. His scenes and stories are so weirdly beautiful, it can take your breath away.
Consider this "Conan 101" and enjoy. I promise, you'll be back for more.
Oh, DO NOT confuse all Conan stories for the genuine articles written by Robert E Howard. And take into consideration that as the author matured, so did his character, Conan.
Nuff said. Enjoy.
I envy you the moment of your first reading of a Conan story.

Conan is travelling, finds a dead woman, and then encounters Valeria of the Red Brotherhood. After trading some insults, they have the misfortune to stumble across a dragon.

Then they have fun in an abandoned city full of crazed warriors, two evil, leering royals, and a third undead type one. Capture, bondage, slayage, all the great stuff in this tale of a fantastic partnership.
