These studies develop further the investigation carried out in Dr Vermes' books Jesus the Jew and The Dead Sea Scrolls and shed light on many important and controversial issues from that period. Subjects include the importance of the Dead Sea Scrolls for Jewish studies and New Testament studies; the relationship of Jewish studies to the interpretation of the New Testament; and Jesus' understanding of himself. In particular, this volume contains the Riddell Memorial Lectures, 'The Gospel of Jesus the Jew', which represent a continuation of Jesus the Jew. `New Testament scholarship owes an increasing debt to Geza Vermes for opening up perspectives on the understanding of the New Testament in its Jewish context. In this collection of lectures and articles dated between 1974 and 1981 we have a useful student's guide to essential Vermes. The material is mostly intended for a non-specialist audience, and so while it is sometimes inevitably oversimplified, it is more accessible to those who are not at home in the complexities of Jewish scholarship .. . No student of the New Testament should be unaware of Venues' positive contributions to our understanding of the world Jesus lived in, and of his challenges to traditional Christian approaches. This collection is a suitable lead-in. You will find it sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating, but generally a salutary challenge to re-examine your historical perspective on Jesus the Jew' (Themelios).

Clear, understandable, historical analysis
By Michael_in_SC
This is a really excellent book on the historical Jesus. It brings out the actual, historical context of the person Jesus (as constrasted with the theological construct of later speculations). It has scholarly depth but is easy to understand by a lay reader. I have enjoyed all of Vermes' books that I have read.

glad tidings
By Tavor Maier
This is a collection of lectures dealing with Jesus' embededness into the Judaism of his time.

Geza Vermes (1924-2013), a very renowned British Bible scholar who also published the Dead Sea Scrolls, applies the methods of historiography, not theology, i.e., his interest is in facts, not in propaganda.

You fail to understand the historical Jesus if you think he was a Christian. Christianity was later. Jesus was a Jew in a Jewish world. Prima facie, that sounds trivial, however, it is not so trivial to see what happens to Jesus when you turn this triviality into a scientific method of posing the appropriate questions concerning the Gospels. We are used to read the New Testament through the glasses of Christianity. But as we can learn from Vermes, this is the best way to deeply misunderstand Jesus since the gravest mistake a historian can make is to assess a phenomenon in the light of later developments.

To add a word as to my very personal reading experience: I rejoiced greatly when I studied these clairvoyant lectures. For I had never before come so close to the Son of Man.

And, behold, while turning the pages, suddenly two men stood by me in white apparel. Which also said unto me: Why sittest thou gazing into that book? For this same Jesus which was taken up into heaven shall so come back in like manner.

And I said unto them, lo, that's glad tidings! But when?

And they answered unto me: July 7, 2016, in the afternoon.

And I kept questioning: Is that a Sabbath.

And they said: Nay, for it is hard work to enter his Kingdom.

And as they had spoken these words unto me, they faded away and only a dense and thick cloud remained in the place where they had stood. So I stopped reading, got up and did at long last the kitchen work. I don't want Jesus to break in on me with all the washing up undone.

Great!
By Bill Lowe
The book is wonderful, and Amazon's service was excellent. Vermes is one of the best Judeo-Christian scholars of our era. Before his death he left us fine books, including the best one to date on the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Art Question, by Nigel Warburton

If an artist sends a live peacock to an exhibition, is it art?
'What is art?' is a question many of us want answered but are too afraid to ask. It is the very question that Nigel Warburton demystifies in this brilliant and accessible little book. With the help of varied illustrations and photographs, from Cézanne and Francis Bacon to Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst, best-selling author Warburton brings a philosopher's eye to art in a refreshing jargon-free style.
With customary clarity, he explains art theories, that are much discussed but little understood, by thinkers such as Clive Bell, R.G Collingwood and Wittgenstein. He illuminates other perplexing problems in art, such as the artist's intention, representation and emotion. Drawing on photographs of Cindy Sherman and Tiananmen Square, Warburton shows that, if we are ever to answer the art question, we must consider each work of art on its own terms.
A stimulating and handy guide through the art maze, The Art Question is essential reading for anyone interested in art, philosophy or those who simply like looking at and thinking about pictures.

Review

'Invaluable... a sound introduction.... Warburton guides the reader gently and accessibly through some of the most influential theories of the twentieth century... He deftly applies the standard tools of philosophy, such as counter-examples and the detection of circular reasoning, to a field that is prone to vagueness, pretentiousness and sometimes elastic notions of meaning and language.... an excellent introduction to the philosophy of art.' - Think

'Nigel Warburton brings a philosopher's eye to the debate ... to explore with admirable clarity, the factors that might turn a roomful of chocolate into a work of art, and why it matters.' - The Independent

I’d like to share a few of my own thoughts
By Glenn Russell
Contemporary British philosopher Nigel Warburton, host of the podcast series “Philosophy Bites” asks us to consider if the live peacock Belgian artist Francis Alÿs recently sent to the Venice Biennale to be entered as a work of art is, in fact, a true work of art. Curiously, this is the same question my philosophy instructor asked our class nearly fifty years ago when he showed us a slide of Alpha-Pi by Morris Lewis, a white canvas with wavy lines of color painted on the bottom left and bottom right. In other words, different work, same question.

In an attempt to address this question, “What is art?” Warburton has written his engaging little book, approaching this philosophic conundrum from four specific theoretical angles: 1) Clive Bell’s significant form, that is, the work’s line, shape and color possessing the power to produce an aesthetic emotion in the viewer, 2) R.G.Collingwood’s theory of emotional expression and clarity of feeling needed in the process of artistic creation, 3) Ludwig Wittgenstein’s focus on the concept of ‘family resemblance’ along with an overview of the nature of language, 4) the ‘Institutional Theory’ developed by George Dickie, shifting attention from the work itself to the context of how the work is exhibited by museums and galleries and how it is appreciated by an audience. As by way of a wrap-up, in the fifth and final section of his little book, Nigel himself steps forward to share his views on the art question. I wouldn’t want to restate the various facets of his position but let me mention one thing he does say: we should move away from general rules and hone our attention back to the individual works themselves.

After reading Nigel’s book and giving the art question some reflection, I’d like to share a few of my own thoughts. This art question revolves around the visual arts, particularly painting and sculpture. The other arts, such as theater, dance and music do not face this question in quite the same way. Why is that? I suspect it has to do with recognized quality of performers and performances, for example, when we see or listen the best of the best – Royal Shakespeare Company, Imperial Russian Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cirque de Soleil, Pilobolus Dance -- we know we are in the presence of great art.

So, my modest view, this is what the visual arts needs in our brave new 21st century world: a breakthrough, that is, an artist or artists creating great art, so great, similar to the above examples of theater and dance, there would be no question as to its greatness. Of course, I don’t have a clue respecting the form such breakthrough art would take, nor do I think such art would sufficiently answer the question ‘What is art’ but by such a breakthrough I strongly suspect the public perception of the visual arts would be enormously enhanced.

Anyway, back on the book. Here is a passage I find especially probing, “What you know and believe affects what you see. Your expectations and knowledge don’t just help you to understand and interpret what you see, they in part help you to construct and categorize what you see.” The example offered is Van Gogh’s painting of crows flying over a cornfield. We look at the painting a first time. Then, we are told this is the last painting Van Gogh painted before killing himself. We take a second look. All of a sudden the crows appear ominous and threatening. I think this examples underscores how art can be a transforming – the more we open ourselves to multiple viewings, open ourselves to exploring the cultural and historical context of a work along with the artist’s development, the more we can grow in our understanding of that specific art form and also grow in our overall artistic sensitivity and aesthetic delicacy of taste. Am I overdoing it with all the sensitivity and delicacy? Reading Nigel Warburton’s little book will undoubtedly help you formulate an opinion. Highly recommended.

Review
I think this is a really good starting point for teaching stats – from assuming students knows nothing about and taking them gradually to a more advanced understanding. The book is – very helpfully- full of interesting examples and engaging style of writing. I like it that the book has several ‘levels of difficulty’ and engages both with practical stats and theory. The book I believe is targeted at UG students mainly, but some chapters can be recommended to MA students on research methods courses provided that they know nothing about statistics – the book is written in a very accessible manner which means that it can satisfy the need of international students in terms of level of difficulty and language (and business programmes normally have a lot of international students at MA level). The explanations are logically organized and explained in a lucid and clear manner. Little features like ‘faces’ I believe would make the book more attractive to UG students. I think self-test questions and the tasks at the end of chapter are very helpful, as well as the real world data and (often humorous) examples. My course is MA so I am not adopting this book for a course as a main text, but I may recommend it to students who are completely unfamiliar with statistics. (Maria Karepova)

Andy Field has done it again.  The fourth edition of Discovering Statistics will transform students who approach statistics with fear and loathing into adroit statistics users who understand key statistical concepts.  Field’s book is a practical ‘how to’ guide for conducting and understanding basic and advanced statistical analyses using IBM SPSS Statistics.  The book is geared toward behavioural and social sciences researchers at all levels – from undergraduates taking their very first statistics course, to postgraduates.  (JoNell Strough Psychology Learning and Teaching)

For the love of God, don't buy this book in Kindle
By DrDad
With considerable pain, I give Andy Field's marvelous, somewhat spectacular book, a 4 star rating. I bought it in Kindle, then in paper. Kindle absolutely lacks the technology to offer the book. I would rate the overall Kindle experience for this book around 2 stars. I will explain in a bit. On the other hand, for content, style, and all that makes for a great book, the paper version has it all hands down. I am a Ph.D. and an author. Never have I seen such an intelligent, witty book on statistics or for that matter on any technical subject. Field has helped me to understand statistics and their use in research in a way I never thought was possible. The paper version is 5+ stars. But books are more than just words in print. They are also a format in and of themselves, which brings me back to Kindle. I have around 200 purchases on Kindle, this is my first technical one. It is not possible to expand the graphs and charts, which are essentially unreadable (nearly microscopic) on the Kindle and are essential in understanding the subject matter. The paper version uses multiple columns and color coding to add to its readability. These are lost on Kindle Touch. Additionally, it is not at all easy to get back to your original location when you opt to tap a reference or go to a figure. You actually have to write down your original location number and "go to" the "got to" menu and type in the number "to get back." For me the Kindle works fine for a linear read, start at the beginning and go straight to the end...and I love it...but not a book that by its nature requires mobility. Now Andy, author to author, sit down with the Kindle and try to read your own book. Make sure you have a box of tissues nearby. :)

The single best resource for introductory and intermediate statistics
By KCP
This is the first book review I have ever given, largely because I don't usually have the time to write a thoughtful review that I think would benefit readers. This book, however, warranted taking the time to try. I practice applied statistics and teach introductory and advanced statistics classes at a university, and I can say hands down this is the best text I have ever used for introductory to intermediate topics. It is the book I would have loved to write if I were smarter and wanted no life for several years -- I thank Andy Field for doing that for us instead. This single work could replace a dozen other quality statistics books I have because of its comprehensiveness. It is almost an anthology of statistics, but you should not let the size of the book scare you off; it is easy to read and even enjoyable. Examples have been carefully compiled and will certainly keep your interest. Even students who say they have found some examples to be a bit crass have also remarked that they don't forget the examples because they are certainly novel.

I have to strongly disagree with the few reviews stating the book is a how-to for SPSS. This is absolutely not a point and click guide. I am a firm believer that students need to know the fundamental mathematics behind statistical tests, or serious mistakes will occur, including violations of assumptions and use of the wrong tests entirely. I have seen it as a journal reviewer, and as an instructor. Field covers basic to advanced analyses with great foundational detail, but he does it in a way that does not leave readers feeling overwhelmed by the math (though it is all there). He occasionally leaves the complicated math to his additional web material, but you will find 99% of what you and/or your students need to know in the text.

Even though I have been in the field for many years, I keep his book on my desk to double check procedures. I firmly believe that students and/or faculty could use this book as their single reference to walk them through their own dissertation and peer-reviewed journal quality research on almost all of the topics covered. The only statistic where that is not true in my opinion is the chapter on multilevel models. However, as people in the field know, that topic is incredibly complicated and esoteric. You will not be an expert in multilevel models from that chapter, but you will have an excellent foundation for understanding them, and even the best complete texts on the topic do not do as good of a job as this book at introducing the concepts.

Whether you're scared of statistics or use them nearly every day, get this book. It is a remarkable resource!

Ok - older version was better!
By Amazon Customer
I previously had access to the older version of this book through the lab that I worked at, and finally decided to buy my own copy. I kind of wish that I had bought the older verison - that one seemed to be much more concise in that it provided exactly the necessary information while remaining grounded in interesting dialog. This newer version has substantially increased the amount of dialog and 'entertainment' to the point where it now seems to be too much (although I should point out that I don't actually have that older version to compare against the newer one - so my memory could be wrong). It makes it difficult to actually weed out the important information from all of this background.

The older version was great - go buy that one instead if you can find it!

My Tao Te Ching - A Fool's Guide to Effing the Ineffable: Ancient spiritual wisdom translated for modern life, by Francis Briers

The Tao Te Ching is an ancient spiritual text from China. It is one of the most wonderful books ever (as proven by special science methods, honest) for helping us human beings to understand life, the universe, and everything. It can help us pierce the mystery, discover the hidden, and do no less than eff the ineffable.

Through poetry and metaphor the Tao Te Ching nudges our consciousness towards greater understanding of the nature of life in all its wonderful mystery and subtle challenge. PRE-PUBLICATION REVIEWS:

"Francis Briers has done a brilliant job of casting the Tao Te Ching into a modern and popular form. His rendition flows with a humour and innocence that truly reflect the essence of the Taoist tradition. Whether you are approaching philosophy and personal development for the first time, or are an experienced explorer, My Tao Te Ching will make you smile with its wry insights and encourage you to be at ease with the wondrous miracle and paradox of your life."

- William Bloom, PhD, and author ‘The Power of Modern Spirituality: How to Live a Life of Compassion and Personal Fulfilment’

“Each chapter is a meditation helping us not to be so grasping, to empty ourselves so that love and compassion can flow through us, without interference. The style of writing is like love poetry and reminds me of the poetry of the many mystical traditions - Such a gift. “

- Dr. Josie Gregory, PhD, and Director of The Centre for Spiritual Development and Facilitation

"I'm happy to have introduced Francis to the 'Tao Te Ching' as his Kung Fu Instructor many years ago and watched his progress over the years. To take on this 'bible' of Taoism could be an onerous task but Francis has the insight, wisdom and humour to make it work. It's an excellent and accurate translation with the wit and humour to keep any normal person engaged and able to understand the original meaning of the text with those deep 'glimpses' that can only come from true understanding."

From Publishers Weekly
Draper's elegantly written, masterful study overturns many preconceptions about the causes of the American Revolution. Before 1763, he observes, the status quo worked largely in favor of the 13 colonies. The Americans dominated the governors sent to rule over them. British customs agents winked at New England smugglers' flourishing trade, and farmers and merchants prospered. But in 1764-1765, the British imposed unpopular taxes and trade restrictions that, combined with Mother England's attempt to reduce the power of the colonial assemblies, brought separatist fervor to the boiling point. To justify the ensuing power struggle, America's ruling elite developed a revolutionary ideology, couching their self-interest in terms of liberty and inalienable rights. Distinguished historian Draper (A Very Thin Line: The Iran-Contra Affair) further argues that the British, having allowed themselves to become economically dependent on the colonies, desperately sought to control colonial trade and manufacture. Drawing freely on period pamphlets, letters, petitions, travelogues and assembly minutes, he vividly evokes the populist discontent, intellectual gymnastics and mob violence that led to revolution.

From Library Journal
The American Revolution is commonly believed to have been caused by the colonists' desire for independence and liberty. Draper (A Very Thin Line: The Iran-Contra Affair, LJ 6/1/91) maintains that the Revolution was really a power struggle spawned by the British system of chartering colonies, which placed fiscal control of public funds with the colonial assemblies. British dependence on American trade and the Colonies' phenomenal population growth only intensified Americans' desire to control their own destiny. Draper quotes heavily from primary sources and sometimes relies totally on colonial writers to make his point without further explanation; this is unfortunate because his style is fairly readable. In the preface, the author notes his intended audience is not the specialist but the interested general reader. However, his revisionist history won't appeal to the public and belongs in academic libraries only.

From Scientific American
Draper . . . has given the historical kaleidoscope a vigorous shake. . . . Fresh and stimulating.

An excellent examination of history unfolding
By Chefdevergue
This is an example of history at its best, in my eyes. Too often, people are tempted to view an event in a vacuum, without examining the causes of the event in question. Beyond that, they more frequently fail to place the event in context with the currents of history.
Certainly nobody can accuse Draper of such a thing. The book begins as the 7-Years War is coming to an end, and controversy rages in Great Britain as to what territories the British are going to claim from France as spoils. This is hardly unusual; conventional history holds that the American Revolution was a direct result of the 7-years War, and efforts by the British government to recoup some of the massive expenditures made during the war. Draper could simply have left it at that, and shown how relations between Britain and the colonies deteriorated over the next decade until the colonist finally revolted.
However, Draper correctly sees that both the controversies of the 1760's and the ultimate revolution in the 1770's are merely symptons of a larger and more severe malady that plagued the British imperial system for nearly a century prior to the American Revolution, namely how the colonies, which were growing more populous and prosperous with each generation, could remain subject to Great Britain. As the colonies grew stronger, how could they be expected to follow dictates of a country that was no longer superior to them in power? He examines the history, as it unfolds from generation to generation, of the balance of power between Britain and its colonies.
Draper does an excellent job of this. To me, this is history at its most magnificent, as the reader sees the forces of history moving through time, with each event or trend influencing successive events and trends. The examination of the writings and speeches of various leaders and thinkers show that it was apparent that a power struggle between Britain and the colonies, in one form or another, was inevitable. Many people on both sides of the Atlantic could see this even in the late 17th century.
Draper also examines how some people attempted, ultimately without success, to avoid the inevitable, through a variety of schemes and proposals. People could see what ultimately would be the result, but tried nonetheless to reach an arrangement that would keep the colonies from breaking away from the mother country. The currents of history proved to be too strong, however, and events moved along towards their inevitable conclusion.
Also fascinating was to see the evolution of the colonists' perception of themselves and how they related to Britain. At the beginning of the 1760's, there was hardly a colonist that could conceive (or admit the truth to himself) of outright independence from Britain. With each succeeding event, the colonists' thinking evolves, and once loyal subjects ultimately become revolutionaries. By contrast, some individuals such as John Dickinson, begin ahead of the revolutionary curve, but because their positions do not evolve, they ultimately are left behind and are perceived almost as counter-revolutionaries.
On the British side, Draper examines the British government's approach towards the increasingly threatening colonies. The policy of Robert Walpole from the 1720's to the early 1740's was simply not to press the issue of Parliamentary primacy. Better to let a future generation make a mistake with the colonies than us, appears to have been the reasoning. By the 1760's, the issues were becoming harder to avoid, but at that time Britain had the misfortune to be ruled by a series of unstable and short-lived governments. Without a coherent and measured colonial policy, the various British governments succeeded only in hastening the inevitable.
Draper quite skillfully weaves together a multitude of historical forces as they unfold, as he moves back and forth across the Atlantic, and down through the succeeding generations. Some readers have found this book to be boring. I have to admit that it took me three tries to make it through the book; however, I have read it three times since then and do not understand how I could have been bogged down. Draper's writing is certainly readable enough.
If you are looking for a Stephen Ambrose-style of history, with lots of narrative, then keep on looking, because this book will be far too cerebral for you. However, if you enjoy a good intellectual examination of history at its conceptual level, I enthusiastically recommend this book.

An In-depth Look at the Causes of the American Revolution
By Zeb
Theodore Draper has taken a new perspective on the American Revolution that I find refreshing. Throughout my american history classes I was force fed the fact that the war was caused by a difference of opinion. That is, the Sons of Liberty and other patriotic organizations were starving for freedom under opressive British rule. In _A_Struggle_for_Power_, Draper relates that the war was faught because of "the power the British wished to exercise over the Americans and the power the Americans wished to exercise over themselves."
Scores of primary sources are quoted, and the information is very developed. It reads well, but the information is not as accesible as _The_Long_Fuse_ by Don Cook. I reccommend both to anyone interested in the political and social causes of the war. If you are looking for the military aspects of the war, pick up a book by Ketchum (excellent).

THE STRUGGLE FOR POWER IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
By Alfred Johnson
In my study of revolutions I have always been interested in two basic questions- what were the ideas swirling around prior to the revolution that brought people to see the need for revolution and the related question of how those ideas played out in the struggle for power. I recently reviewed Professor Gordon Wood's Radicalism in the American Revolution that posed the first of this question, that is the influence of ideas about the nature of individual freedom, about the creation of the frame of government and about who should govern. In the present review of Theodore Draper's book this second question is dealt with at length. Although Mr. Draper has many insightful thoughts about the duration and intensity of that struggle against the mother country England one must recognize that this is not one of his major historical works. Draper's major historical work, for which he will be well remembered, lies elsewhere. (In his definitive two-volume study of the Stalinization of the American Communist Party and on Iran/Contra.)

That said, as mentioned above one of the most interesting of Mr. Draper's insights is the rather long period of struggle by elements in the individual colonial governments against the rule (or better, rules since they were not uniformly applied) imposed by England. Previous study had led me to assume that these struggles had a relatively recent origin only a few decades prior to the revolution. What is apparent is that a `cold' dual power situation existed between England and some of the administrations in the colonies for a fairly long time before `hot' dual power occurred with the creation of the Continental Congress and the formation of militias in 1774. The distance from the mother country and the relatively looseness of the ties between colony and metropolis accounts for this tension. Part also came from a need to deal with political, social and economic questions faster than edicts from England would permit and part by the structure of many of the colonial governments that acted to check the imperial power by controlling the purse strings or the local power elite.

An overriding question that hovers over Mr. Draper's theme is whether a revolution in America was necessary (or wise) given the relatively narrow issues that pulled the parties apart for most of the pre-revolutionary period. His answer is that the whole long pre-history of struggle between indigenous elements of colonial society and the haughtiness of officialdom under imperial rule dictated the need for revolution. To this reviewer's mind, while he agrees with Mr. Draper's conclusion, this is a rather fruitless question. Revolutions occur for whatever reasons because the parties (or at least one of the parties) see no other way out. Post-hoc analysis, while interesting, does not explain why this occurs and why post-hoc knowledge does not make one wiser about how to avoid revolution, especially on the part of the ruling classes. Mr. Draper has, nevertheless, presented an interesting thesis about the sources of conflict in the American setting and the role of national consciousness in the pre- revolutionary period. Read on.
