BEST OF THE BEST

No fan of Conan would give such a lousy review and only 2 stars! This is one of Robert E. Howard's (1906-1936) best stories ever as told by all REH Scholars! REH is the creator of Conan, Bran Mak Morn, Red Sonja, Kull, Solomon Kane, and many other characters and even poetry and horror stories! He's the best writer and poet ever!

Red Nails starts out with a prehistoric monster chasing Valeria with Conan in hot pursuit. They climb a tree and from their the story gets really good.

If you've never read a REH story you're in for a real treat! Read Red Nails for free and then get the REH Ominbus 99 stories for only $1.99 and read other outstanding stories he's written.

Beyond The Black River, Red Nails, and Tower of The Elephant are three of my favorite REH Conan stories.

Can I add another 5 stars to the above?

First of all, I started reading "Conan the Barbarian" books by Robert E Howard when I was 9 years old. With the help of a dictionary, I parsed the wickedly exciting stories and fell in love with this genre.
Meanwhile, revisiting this story now as an adult, and being able to appreciate it for the masterpiece it is, well, it's just wonderful.
You can't go wrong with this one as an introduction to the sword and sorcery genre. His scenes and stories are so weirdly beautiful, it can take your breath away.
Consider this "Conan 101" and enjoy. I promise, you'll be back for more.
Oh, DO NOT confuse all Conan stories for the genuine articles written by Robert E Howard. And take into consideration that as the author matured, so did his character, Conan.
Nuff said. Enjoy.
I envy you the moment of your first reading of a Conan story.

Conan is travelling, finds a dead woman, and then encounters Valeria of the Red Brotherhood. After trading some insults, they have the misfortune to stumble across a dragon.

Then they have fun in an abandoned city full of crazed warriors, two evil, leering royals, and a third undead type one. Capture, bondage, slayage, all the great stuff in this tale of a fantastic partnership.

I wrote this books to help people, especially younger generation, to understand what it really means to be a Hindu. Hinduism is not just another "ism." Hindu religious tradition represents a profound philosophy of life that is based upon many noble ideals, such as total harmlessness to all creatures (ahimsa), universal brotherhood (Vasudhaiva kutumbakam), religious and cultural harmony, reverence for old age, and respect for one's parents, teachers, and elders. Hinduism teaches that Truth is one, but paths are many. Hindu scriptures declare that "cows are of different colors, but their milk is of the same color. Beneath all different colors of the skins, lies the blood of the same color." Devoid of any dogma, blind faith or fanaticism, Hindus act out of love for God and not out of His fear. Hinduism is a God-loving religion and not a God-fearing one.

In today's society where family values are deteriorating rapidly, elders are made to feel useless, unwanted, and burdensome, crime is on the rise and individual and social values are on the decline, it is our utmost responsibility to teach the lofty ideals of the ancient wisdom to our youth. To help them live harmoniously with themselves and with rest of the creation, we must teach them what is good and noble in life, as taught by the sages and saints of India.

Also great for non-Hindus

A few years ago I went to my favorite metaphysical bookstore in Cambridge, MA, and asked them to recommend a good book for learning about Hinduism. They pointed me to The Hindu Mind. I've read many books on spiritual philosophy from different traditions and I can say this ranks right up there as one of my favorites. Mr. Pandit explains the many facets of Hinduism with intelligence and clarity. His straightforward writing style is easy to read and understand. The book is organized well also. He presents Hinduism from 3 perspectives: the philosophical, religious and cultural.

Mr. Pandit also includes a couple of chapters with philosophical perspectives on Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism as all 3 are offshoots from Hindism. He points out which aspects of Hindusim they kept and where their beliefs differ.

One of the things I love about Hinduism is how intelligent it is. Of all the religions I've studied it's one of my favorites. (Note: I'm a neopagan mystic.) The ancients recognized that people are different and that different temperaments are attracted to different spiritual philosophies. Hinduism is the ultimate melting pot religion, and is capable of containing the complexity of multiple spiritual belief systems unified by a few key threads. I'm sure that's why it's survived all these thousands of years.

No matter what your religious background, if you are an openminded person you wil learn much from this book that can be applied to your own path, whatever that may be.

Extremely informative, easy-to-read, and enlightening.

I found this book to be very well organized and indexed, making it easy to use as a reference guide. The book not only provides a solid foundation of all aspects of Hinduism, it illustrates the practical nature of these beliefs. Ancient Sanskrit verses that are still commonly used by Hindus today are translated while retaining there original charm. I also found that the book does a good job in clearing the common misperceptions of this religion and distinguishes between the actual religion and philosophy versus ascribed meanings by sources outside of Hinduism. I would recommend this book to anyone, particularly those that are intrigued by this religion but don't want to be overwhelmed. If nothing else, the index, charts, tables, and illustrations will provide a wealth of information

About the Author
W.J. Burley lived near Newquay in Cornwall, and was a schoolmaster until he retired to concentrate on his writing. His many Wycliffe books include, most recently, Wycliffe and the Guild of Nine. He died in 2002.

First in the series

This is the first book in the Wycliffe series and the first one I have read though I can remember watching the television series many years ago. Wycliffe himself is an interesting character - very laid back and not keen on paper work. This is an interesting case. A woman with a mysterious past and an amoral present is found dead in a house she rents in a small Cornish village.

Many suspects present themselves to Wycliffe's calm and interested gaze and many people have secrets they really want to keep hidden both from the police and from their nearest and dearest.

When Wycliffe and his team start digging into the past they find that the victim's husband died in mysterious circumstances and one of her lovers almost died in a suspect road accident which has left him badly scarred. I liked the writing and the way the claustrophobic atmosphere of the small community is evoked. The characters and their motivations are well drawn and believable.

If you prefer your crime without graphic violence and bad language then give this series a try. This is crime writing in the classic mould and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading such authors as Patricia Wentworth, Georgette Heyer, Gladys Mitchell and Margery Allingham.

Surprised by the sexism

This was written in 1968--I was 8. I guess I have forgotten how much anti-female rhetoric was acceptable. The females are vilified less than the two gay characters, but it was all pretty awful. I have read later books by him that were not so mean-spirited, so maybe he matured in his thinking or his editors did.

Readable but not exciting

The detection is this book is reasonable. It's unfortunate that the main character Wycliffe is such a gloomy man with little love of humanity. Still, the book is readable.

is it too early to label this a classic?

Ulric really did his homework on this offering. This is a very well produced book, solid binding, heavy pages, dust jacket and even a silk ribbon marker. There is an impressive mix of well chosen contemporary and vintage images and a thoughtfully laid out division of materials. The book is divided into two parts. The first part treats the philosophy, beliefs and culture of this military organization and the second showcases an impressive collection of its myriad artifacts. The overall work leaves one with a much greater understanding of the SS and its members. This book had to have taken an enormous amount of time and research to produce. Only someone with Ulric's vast related background could do justice to such a project.
